Three athletes who claimed U.S. Beach Nationals titles on Saturday added International Beach Cup gold medals on Sunday at Ontario Beach Park.

All of the athletes who competed in Saturday’s national tournament were eligible to enter the International Cup, but competition was held in the four new international weight classes for Beach Wrestling.

Those who swept U.S. Beach National and International Beach Cup titles this weekend were
• Michael Gentilcore of Oswego State WC at 80 kg/176 lbs.
• Oleksander Ievitushenko of the Brooklyn WC at 90 kg/198 lbs.
• Jamison Sacco of Western New England in the Over 90 kg/198 lbs. division

Gentilcore, who was the 154-pound U.S. Beach Nationals champion on Saturday, needed all three bouts to win a best-of-three series over Connery Wheaton of the G2 World Wrestling Academy. Gentilcore won the first match, 2-1 and Wheaton rebounded to win bout two, 2-1. In the deciding third bout, Gentilcore won by a 2-0 margin. Gentilcore competes for Oswego State.

Ievitushenko, who claimed the 208-pound Beach national title on Saturday, won his best-of-three series over Marc Collins of Victor WC in two straight matches, 2-1 and by pin in 1:30. Collins was also a U.S. Beach Nationals champion on Saturday, winning the 187-pound division.

Ievitushenko is a native of Ukraine who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. He trains at Yeshiva University under Coach Victor Kupchynsky, who has coached heavyweight Carlos Dolmo to two Beach World medals.

Sacco won all three of his matches in a four-man roundrobin, including two matches by pin. Sacco was a 2010 NCAA Div. III qualifier from Western New England University.

Claiming the final men’s weight class was Joe Bonaldi of Spartan WC, who won a three-athlete round-robin at 70 kg/154 lbs. Bonaldi scored a victory over runner-up Jason Goldman, the 151-pound Beach Nationals champion on Saturday. Bonaldi, a two-time New York state high school placewinner, will attend Binghamton University in the fall

Winning the Women’s 80 kg/176 lbs. title uncontested was Donna Rosen.

In the tradition of major wrestling events around the world, as well as at the Beach World Championships each year, the winners of the top two weight classes agreed to compete in an Absolute Match at the conclusion of the event.

Sacco, the heavyweight champion, defeated the 98 kg/198 lbs. champion Ievitushenko by a 2-0 margin. It was a competitive battle marked by strong pummeling skills by both athletes, but Sacco used his size and Beach wrestling experience to score a pair of takedowns.

The annual National High School Beach Championships were held alongside the International Beach Cup. Claiming the team title was the Empire WC, which finished with a 5-0 record in the dual meet event. (See related story).
