Three U.S. freestyle wrestlers lost their bids for bronze medals on Friday at the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan. Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) finished fifth at 55kg/121 pounds, as did Phillip Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 66kg/145.5 pounds and Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio/Golden Pride WC) at 96kg/211.5 pounds. Hazewinkel lost 2-0, 2-0 to Kazakhstan's Ruslan Seksenbayev in the bronze medal match. Hazewinkel got into the repechage rounds after a first-round loss to eventual finalist Giorgi Edisherashvili of Georgia. He topped Azerbaijan's Yashar Aliyev 1-0, 2-0 to advance to the bronze medal final. Simpson lost to Azerbaijan's Jabrayil Hasanov, a 2010 World bronze medalist 2-0, 6-1. Hasanov is also a two-time European champion, winning in 2010 and 2011. Hasanov made the finals and eventually won the weight, giving Simpson a chance to wrestle back. Simpson bested Georgia's Tsotne Baramidze 3-2, 1-1 and then faced Turkey's Muhammed Ilkkam, who placed fifth in last year's World Championships. Ilkkam defeated Simpson 1-1, 1-0 to claim the bronze medal. While finishing fifth in his first overseas senior level tournament, NCAA champion Dustin Kilgore did pick off one notable opponent. In his opening round bout at 96kg, Kilgore bested 2009 World bronze medalist Serhat Balci of Turkey 3-0, 1-3, 1-0. Kilgore would then fall to reigning World Champion Khetag Gazyumov and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist 6-0, 7-0 in the semifinals. Kilgore would end up fifth after falling to 2010 Junior World Champion Shamil Akhmedov of Russia 6-0, 6-0. “The Golden Grand Prix is one of the toughest tournaments on the planet, and we understood this going into the event. Our Team was excited to compete, but we came up short in many of our matches. The bright spots were Phil Simpson at 66K and Dustin Kilgore wrestling for 3rd in their very first International competition. Plus, in Kilgore’s very first International match, he beat Balci from Turkey who was a World Bronze Medalist in 2009. Kilgore now believes he is capable of being a World Champion, and we look forward to working with him at the OTC over the next year during his Olympic red shirt year.†“Jake Herbert and Jarod Trice are coming home July 10, and Andrew Howe, Phil Simpson, Dustin Kilgore and I are off to meet the rest of Team USA in Kiev, Ukraine. We should have outstanding training in Kiev for 10 days before we compete in the Ukranian International Tournament on July 23-24.†Competition continues on Saturday with all seven women's weights and the Greco-Roman competition concludes the action on Saturday. The U.S. did not send any women's wrestlers to the event and will have Greco-Roman World Teamers Spenser Mango (55kg/121 pounds), Jake Fisher (74kg/163 pounds), Justin Ruiz (96kg/211.5 pounds) and Dremiel Byers (120kg/264.5 pounds) in action along with C.P. Schlatter (66kg/145.5 pounds) and Jordan Holm (84kg/185 pounds) in action.
