CALIFORNIA GRIZZLEY WINS JUNIOR GRECO-ROMAN DUALS, DEFEATING MINNESOTA WHAT'S UP IN THE FINALS, 33-16California Grizzly defeated Minnesota What's Up, 33-16 to claim the team title at the 2000 Junior National Greco-Roman Duals, held in Oklahoma City, Okla. June 30.
California Grizzly won four of the first five matches and eight of the 12 total championship matches. Recording technical fall victories for California Grizzly in the gold-medal dual were Mike Simpson at 132 pounds, Kenny Cook at 154 pounds, and Jordan Everett at 220 pounds. Claiming a pin for California was Joe Espinoza at 114.5 pounds. Matt Nagel and Brad Tupa scored technical falls for Minnesota What's Up at 143 pounds and 165 pounds respectively.
Washington 2 took third place honors, defeating Iowa 34-16 in the bronze-medal dual meet. Swank North Dakota claimed fifth by defeating the Oklahoma White Flames 30-22. Wisconsin Wolfpack dominated Kansas Gold 44-4 to take seventh place. Winning the consolation bracket were the California Golden Bears with a 31-18 victory over Missouri #1. A total of 15 teams participated in the Greco-Roman competition. The National Junior Freestyle Duals will be held at Oklahoma City, Okla., June 30. The Freestyle tournament begins today.
