GUELPH, Canada - The United States had a very strong performance in the women’s competition in the Pre-Junior division of the Canada Cup on Sunday.

A large group of American wrestlers who were medalists at the Body Bar FILA Cadet National Championships in Florida in May attended the event, and were coached by USOEC Assistant Coach Tony DeAnda, who is the national coach on the FILA Cadet level.

In addition, club programs from Michigan and New England also attended this international competition.

U.S. wrestlers who won gold medals included:
• Amy Hou, Rome, Ga. at 43 kg/94.75 lbs.
• Kayla Miracle, Bloomington, Ind. at 49 kg/108 lbs.
• Julia Salata, Canton, Mich. at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Hou won a three-athlete round-robin, beating Canadian opponents Tina Chakalall and Katy Waite. Hou was a silver medalist at this year’s FILA Cadet Nationals.

Miracle won all three of her matches, including a victory over American Taylor Zboray of the Nieves WC, 4-3, 2-1 in the finals. Miracle won the FILA Cadet Nationals this year and won both the Cadet and Junior divisions at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals. She is an ASICS First Team All-American.

Salata pinned her first two opponents, then stopped American Mary Westman in the finals, 5-1, 6-0. Salata is a two-time Junior Nationals champion and an ASICS First Team All-American.

Five American wrestlers won silver medals:
• Taylor Zboray, Manchester, Conn., at 49 kg/108 lbs.
• Payton Woodall, Plainfield, Ill. at 56 kg/123.25 lbs.
• Rosemary Flores, Staten Island, N.Y. at 60 kg/132 lbs.
• Mary Westman, Cattaraugus, N.Y. at 70 kg/154 lbs.
• Katelyn Hill, Brighton, Mich., at 80 kg/176 lbs.

Five American wrestlers claimed bronze medals:
• Cassidy Ferrell, Woodlyn, Pa. at 40 kg/88 lbs.
• Patricia Martin, Traverse City, Mich. at 46 kg/101.25 lbs.
• Hanna Grisewood, Warsaw, N.Y. at 49 kg/108 lbs.
• Virginia Burkett, Mountain View, Wyo. at 65 kg/143.25 lbs.
• Autumn Rux, Lansing, Mich. at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Overall, American women wrestlers took home 13 medals from the competition.

The United States team, which consisted of the FILA Cadet women athletes who attended as a group, won the team title in women’s freestyle, with 68 points, followed by Canada with 52 points and Team Ontario with 21 points. The Nieves Wrestling Club, based in New England, was tied in fourth with 10 points. Michigan Women’s Wrestling scored four team points in the standings.
