SAO PAULO, Brazil – The United States won the team title in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman at the Pan American Junior Championships this weekend.

Combined with the U.S. victory in women’s freestyle on Saturday, the United States took team titles in all three international styles.

The U.S. men’s team consisted of eight wrestlers who competed in both the Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments.

Two U.S. wrestlers won gold medals in both styles, Tyler Lehmann of Fargo, N.D. at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Nicola Bogojevic of Superior, Wis. at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Lehman won a three-athlete round-robin in Greco-Roman, scoring technical falls in both matches. In freestyle, Lehmann won a four-athlete round-robin, winning all three bouts including a victory over runner-up Juan Izodoro of Brazil. Lehmann is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete in freestyle wrestling.

Bogojevic won three bouts in Greco-Roman, including a victory over Hugo Cunha of Brazil in the finals, 4-0, 7-0. He also had three wins in freestyle, capped off with a 3-0, 5-0 win over Donovan Dale of Canada in the finals. Bogojevic attends Augsburg College.

"The trip to Sao Paulo was a great experience and an opportunity to see new competition and styles of wrestling,” said Lehmann.

The Greco-Roman tournament was contested first. The United States scored 68 points, followed by Brazil with 49 points and Mexico with 46 points in a 10-team field.

Winning Greco-Roman silver medals were Jake Bellis of Bloomington, Ill. at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Cody Hummer, Amazonia, Mo. at 55 kg/121 lbs. Claiming Greco-Roman bronze medals were Justin Lavalle of Burnsville, Minn. at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Kalvin York of New Glarus, Wis. at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Caleb Smith of Pakota, Ind. at 84 kg/185 lbs.

The men’s freestyle tournament was a closer team contest, with the United States finishing with 65 points and Canada with 62 points. Mexico was third with 46 points, in a 13-team field.

The U.S. had four individual freestyle champions: Lehmann, Bogojevic, Bellis and Lavalle.

Bellis won a four-athlete roundrobin, winning all three of his bouts, including a victory over runner-up Patrick Leynes of Canada, 7-5, 3-5, 2-0. Bellis is a student at Northern Michigan Univ., where he is with the U.S. Olympic Education Center program.

Lavalle won four straight matches to claim the freestyle title, including a gold-medal victory over Gaelan Malloy of Canada, 4-2, 1-0. Lavalle attends Old Dominion University.

York and Smith added bronze medals for the United States, giving each of them a bronze medal in both styles at the competition.

The U.S. men’s team was coached by Eric Wetzel of Chicago, Ill. and Matt Clark of Park Rapids, Minn.
