FARMINGTON, Utah — Six wrestlers were able to earn prestigious USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crowns, after winning national titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman during the 2011 season.

These six young stars were able to complete this achievement by winning both styles at the 2011 ASICS USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals on June 27-28. They had previously won USA Wrestling National Folkstyle titles in Iowa in April.

There were 575 wrestlers from 34 states who took to the mats at the Legacy Center in Farmington, Utah for the completion of the USA Wrestling Kids wrestling national schedule.

This year’s Triple Crown winners were
Novice 95 – Travis Wittlake (Oregon)
Schoolboy/girl 70 – Louie Hayes (Illinois)
Schoolboy/girl 128 – Beau Breske (Wisconsin)
Schoolboy/girl 144 – Mason Manville (Virginia)
Schoolboy/girl 160 – Samuel Colbray (Oregon)
Schoolboy/girl 175 – Tevis Bartlett (Wyoming)

Colbray and Bartlett actually moved up a weight for this competition from the division where they claimed their folkstyle titles.

Colbray took care of business with three falls in his three matches in the freestyle tournament to go along with three pins in the Greco-Roman tournament the day previous.

“I would like to say freestyle is my favorite though Greco comes a bit more naturally,” said Colbray, who also dreams big of wrestling college at either Oregon State, Iowa or Minnesota. He is still one year away from high school where he will attend Hermiston, winners of five straight titles at the prep level.

Bartlett won his two matches, one by pin and one by technical fall in freestyle with two pins in the Greco-Roman tournament. However, Bartlett prefers folkstyle.

“I like folkstyle the best because it is the style I do the most,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett who will wrestle for Cheyenne East High School next season as an incoming freshman actually is also interested in playing football in college but is still content with his recent Triple Crown.

“The Triple Crown is one of my goals,” related Bartlett who won two of the three legs last year.

Hayes pinned Utah’s Jaxon Cole in the first round to nail down the freestyle title and a Triple Crown performance. Hayes also beat Cole in the Greco-Roman finals.

Hayes, who will be in the 8th grade next year, is setting his sight on the Olympics and wants to be a NCAA champ, preferably wrestling for the Penn State Nittany Lions. He also says freestyle is his favorite of the three styles.

“I like freestyle because I find it easier,” Hayes said. “I like rolling around and trying different moves.”

Breske completed the Triple Crown as he earned a hard-fought victory over Washington’s Corde’ Ferreira 1-0, 3-1 in freestyle. It was the first time the pair had wrestled and Breske said that Ferreira was a tough opponent.

Breske hopes to get a scholarship in wrestling saying Wisconsin or Penn State are his top choices right now. He also has set a goal to wrestle in the Olympics. His favorite style is Greco-Roman.

“I like Greco because I don’t have to protect my legs and I can try all the moves I want, no limit,” Breske remarked.

Manville won the 144-pound Schoolboy title with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 technical fall victory over Texas’ James Clark in the finals of the freestyle tournament.

Manville wants to wrestle in the 2016 Olympics and is setting his sights on wrestling for Cornell or Penn State.

“My favorite style is Greco-Roman because you don’t have to worry about your lower half of your body and you work to control the upper half and get to do throws,”stated Manville.

Wittlake defeated Michigan’s Lucas Macfarland 7-1, 3-0 to take home the gold in the freestyle tourney to lock up his second straight Triple Crown.

Wittlake’s wrestling hero is Cael Sanderson but right now dreams of wrestling at Oregon State.

“Folkstyle is my favorite style because I like attacking the legs,” he said.

Tournament Director Cole Kelley was again pleased to bring the USA Wrestling Kids Nationals to Utah.

“The field of wrestlers has grown each year it has been in Utah,” Kelley said. “As a Utah native, it has been great to expose our Utah wrestlers to the level of talent that attends this event.”

In addition to the six Triple Crown winners, there were 26 other double champions, winners of both the Greco-Roman and freestyle events in Utah.
