Going into Monday night's championship final at the USA Wrestling Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City, Team Illinois had to be feeling pretty confident. In three previous dual championship finals in the past week, Team Illinois entered the final round unbeaten, and in three previous dual championships, Team Illinois ended the day hoisting the championship trophy. Monday would be no different, as the state association from the Land of Lincoln captured a rare feat, capturing the Junior National Freestyle Dual championship with a 47-12 victory over host Oklahoma at Abe Lemons Arena. Illinois rolled past Oklahoma 43-19 in pool competition and it was pretty much the deja vu all over again. This time, Illinois won 13 of the 15 bouts with only one match in the entire dual going the full three periods. Nkosi Moody gave Illinois a 4-0 lead after leading off the dual at 98 pounds with a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over Grahm Godfrey. Illinois followed with a Matt Garelli forfeit at 105 pounds before Oklahoma won its first bout. Matt Manley topped Sebastian Pique for the second time in the tournament, picking up a 5-1, 2-0 victory at 112 pounds. Illinois would reel off four straight victories, three by a trio of their top guns, from 119-135 to built a 24-4 lead. Jered Cortez topped Gunner Woodburn 5-0, 6-0 at 119 pounds, while at 125, Eddie Klimara, last year's Junior National Champion, beat Will Steltzlen 6-2, 10-2 and Zane Richards followed with a 6-0, 3-0 win over Brian Crutchmer 6-0, 3-0 at 130. Oklahoma tried to mix it up by bumping Chase Ferman up to 140 pounds and putting Connor Baxter in at 135. Ferman beat Illinois' Jameson Oster in pool competition, but this time around, Oster would pick up the win at the weight, pinning Baxter at 1:37 in the second period. Ferman would bump up to take on Kevin Moylan at 140. Moylan would pick up a 6-0, 8-6 victory and extend Illinois' lead to 27-5. Brian Murphy continued the Illinois blitzkrieg, picking up a 4-0, 7-1 over Ricky McCarty at 145 pounds. Edwin Cooper dominated Kyle Ash at 152 pounds, picking up a 6-0, 5-0 victory. Cooper went three periods with Ash earlier in the tournament, but the second time around, it was all Cooper. Spartacus Chino made it eight wins in a row for Illinois by picking up a sound two-period victory over Oklahoma's Zach Skates at 160 pounds. Kyle Crutchmer finally gave Oklahoma its first win since 112 with a tough three-period victory at 171 pounds over Dylan Reel. Crutchmer topped Reel earlier in the tournament in a similar three-period tussle. Sam Brooks cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 technical fall over Nolan Boyd at 189 pounds, extending the Illinois lead to 41-10. Austin Marsden had no problem getting used to his soon-to-be state of college residency, beating Austin Schafer 6-0, 4-2 at 215 pounds. Marsden has signed to wrestle at Oklahoma State. Jeremy Brazil finished off the Illinois rout with a 2-1, 3-0 victory over Evan McGee at 285 pounds.
