This event will determine the women’s freestyle athletes who will represent the United States at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey in three non-Olympic weight classes: 51 kg/112.25 lbs., 59 kg/130 lbs. and 67 kg/147.5 lbs. The U.S. women’s freestyle team members in the four Olympic weight classes were determined at the 2011 U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma City, Okla., June 10-11. There will be eight past U.S. World Team members in this talented field of athletes. At 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), a two-time World Team member at this weight class will compete, as will Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), a 2010 World Team member at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. There are three past World Team members at 59 kg/130 lbs., all who have competed at the World Championships at this weight class. They include Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who was fifth in the 2008 and 2009 World Championships, Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who was fifth at the 2010 World Championships and Leigh Jaynes (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who competed at the 2007 World Championships. Three more past World Team members will wrestle at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., including Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who was fifth in this weight at the 2009 World Championships. Kristie Davis (Yukon, Okla./Gator WC/OCU), a two-time World Champion and nine-time World medalist competing at a variety of weights, is registered to compete. Stephany Lee (Colo. Springs, Colo.Sunkist Kids), a two-time World Team member at 72 kg/158.5 lbs., is also scheduled to compete. No athletes will sit out until the best-of-three finals series in this event, and all must enter the Challenge Tournament. The two finalists from the Challenge Tournament in each weight will meet in a best-of-three series to determine the U.S. World Team member. The athletes weigh in on Friday, July 1. Competition is on Saturday, July 2, with Challenge Tournament preliminaries through semifinals starting at 9:00 a.m. The best-of-three finals will be held with bout one at 1:00 p.m., bout two at 2:00 p.m. and bout three at 3:00 p.m. “This has done what we thought. Everyone would try out for the Olympic weights, and those that didn’t win there would take the second chance and try out for the non-Olympic weights,†said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner. “From the National Teams perspective, this gives us our best World Team and National Team. When we go to the World Championships this year, we want our best people on the mat.†Additionally, the Junior Greco-Roman World Team spot at 66kg will be decided on the same day. There will be a best two-out-of-three wrestle off between Ellis Coleman and RaVaughn Perkins. Perkins won the FILA Junior World Team Trials, but Coleman was injured and unable to compete. Since Coleman is a returning Junior World medalist, he earned the right to defer a wrestle-off for the spot.
