Minnesota 1 sweeps Schoolboy/girl National Duals, beating Pennsylvania Blue in both finals

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Minnesota 1 claimed the team title in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at the USA Wrestling Schoolboy/girl National Duals, held June 8-12.

Minnesota 1 stopped Pennsylvania Blue in the finals of both styles, winning the Greco-Roman finals, 46-26, and claiming the freestyle finals by a razor thin 37-36.

In the Greco-Roman finals, Pennsylvania Blue started strong, winning five of the first six matches. However, Minnesota 1 rallied to claim 10 of the last 11 matches, dominating in the upperweights.

In the finals match for Minnesota, Keegan Moore scored a pin at 136 pounds, and three Minnesota wrestlers scored technical falls, Corey Flaata (152), Tristyn Hanson (160) and Adam Treptau (265). 

For Pennsylvania in the finals bout, Josh Collello scored a pin at 190 pounds, while Spencer Lee earned a technical fall at 98 pounds.

Minnesota had five wrestlers go undefeated for the event to make the All-Tournament team, while Pennsylvania had two unbeaten athletes. (See related story on All-Tournament Teams).

Placing third in Greco-Roman was Illinois, which beat Team Wisconsin 40-33. Taking fifth was Pennsylvania Red which tied Indiana Gold, 39-39 but won the tie-breaker. In seventh was Team New Jersey, which stopped Team Maryland, 41-30.

In freestyle, Minnesota heavyweight Adam Treptau scored a pin over Gene Ringer of Pennsylvania to give Minnesota 1 a one-point victory in the championship dual.

Pennsylvania Blue won nine bouts in the dual, while Minnesota 1 had eight victories. The difference in the bout was bonus points scored by the Minnesota wrestlers.

Minnesota scored five pins in finals match. Joining Treptau with pins were Griffin Parriott (112), Drake Heath (136), Keegan Moore (144) and Lance Benick (190).

On the other hand, Pennsylvania Blue got bonus points with a pin by Jonathan Gabriel at 77 pounds, plus technical falls by Eric Hong (84), Spencer Lee (98), Derek Gulotta (105) and Buzzy Maines (210).

Minnesota placed eight on the All-Tournament Team in freestyle, while Pennsylvania had seven on the All-Tournament Team.
