Reece Humphrey was one of the surprise winners at the U.S. Open.

A gifted young freestyle prospect, Humphrey knocked off past World silver medalist Mike Zadick in the semifinals before edging 2009 World Team member Shawn Bunch in the U.S. Open finals at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Humphrey is now the favorite for the U.S. World Team Trials, set for June 10-11 in Oklahoma City.

Humphrey’s win at the U.S. Open clinches him a spot in the best-of-3 finals series at the World Team Trials. Humphrey is a past University World silver medalist and NCAA runner-up.

Humphrey placed fourth in the New York AC International and fifth in the Dave Schultz Memorial this season.

Bunch is expected to be Humphrey’s top challenger. Bunch placed second in the World Team Trials last year behind Zadick. Bunch won the Medved International earlier this season.

Zadick, who has made three of the last four U.S. World Teams at 60 kilos, has only competed in two events this season. He placed fourth at the U.S. Open before falling in the first round of the Pan American Championships.

Coleman Scott turned in a strong performance at the U.S. Open. He placed third. Scott is a past NCAA champion.

Drew Headlee came in fifth in the Open after winning by injury default over two-time NCAA champion Matt Valenti. Headlee placed third in the Cerro Pelado event in Cuba.

Past Iowa State wrestler Nick Fanthorpe downed past NCAA champion Derek Moore in the seventh-place match. Moore placed fifth in the Medved event this season.

Two-time NCAA All-American Tyler Graff of Wisconsin is another wrestler to watch. Graff, a two-time Junior World Team member, was seventh in the 2010 U.S. Open.

Logan Stieber could also make an impact. He has bumped up a weight class after wrestling well at 55 kg/121 lbs. The Ohio State wrestler placed fourth in this event two years ago.
