Jenna Burkert named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 10-16

Jenna Burkert (Middle Island, N.Y./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 10-16.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Burkert qualified for the U.S. FILA Junior World Team after winning the Body Bar FILA Junior Women’s Nationals on Sunday in Kissimmee, Fla.

Burkert captured the women’s freestyle title at 59 kg/130 lbs. Winners in the eight international weight classes qualified for the U.S. team that will compete in the FILA Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, July 26-31.

Burkert was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. She stopped Gabrielle Klein in the finals, with a pin in the first match and a 8-0, 5-0 shutout in the second bout.

Burkert placed fourth at April’s U.S. Open in Cleveland. She wrestles for the U.S. Olympic Education Center program at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. She is a senior at Marquette High School.

Burkert placed fifth in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
