Haley Augello of Illinois receives the Outstanding Wrestler award from Olympian Marcie Van Dusen after winning the FILA Cadet Nationals title at 46 kg KISSIMMEE, Florida – The U.S. FILA Cadet World Team was determined at a very competitive Body Bar FILA Cadet Women’s Nationals, held in the Exhibition Building in Osceola Heritage Park on Saturday. A best-of-three series was held to determine the winner in each of the international weight classes. Champions earn the right to represent the United States at the FILA Cadet World Championships are hosted in Szombathely, Hungary on Aug. 23-28. FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. Only one of the finals series went the full three matches. At 52 kg/114.5 lbs., Rachel McFarland (DeWitt, Mich. (Michigan Women`s Wrestling) needed three bouts to defeat Hanna Grisewood (Warsaw, N.Y./Team New York). Grisewood won the first match 3-0, 1-1, but McFarland got her takedown attack going to win the next two bouts. The second match went to McFarland, 1-0, 1-0 and the final match ended 2-0, 5-0 for McFarland. McFarland was a 2011 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals champion, and placed fifth at the Junior Nationals last summer. Grisewood was a FILA Cadet Nationals runner-up last year and has been a Folkstyle Nationals finalist the last two years. “I knew her move was the firemans, and I knew how to stay away from that. I kept my motion and worked my moves to win the matches. She was way stronger than I expected,†said McFarland. “I am so happy about the opportunity to travel to world to wrestle for the United States.†Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler award was Haley Augello (Lockport, Ill./Team Overtime), the champion at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. Augello won both of her finals series matches over Amy Hou (Rome, Ga./Team Georgia) by technical fall. She won the first bout 7-0, 6-0 and the second bout 10-3, 7-0. Augello was a Junior Nationals champion last summer. “I felt pretty strong today. I wrestled my best. It showed on the mat I work hard. My goal was to come here to win this,†said Augello. Winning the title at 49 kg/108 lbs. was Kayla Miracle (Culver, Ind./Culver Academy), who pinned Sheykaliz Cintron of Puerto Rico in both finals matches. Miracle won the first match with a second period fall at 35 seconds, then won the second match with a pin in 1:26. Miracle was a USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion in both the Cadet and Junior divisions earlier this year. The Doi sisters of Kingsburg, Calif. both qualified for the U.S. FILA Cadet World Teams with victories on Saturday. At 43 kg/ 94.75 lbs., Regina Doi defeated Cassidy Ferrell (Woodlyn, Pa./WOW), two matches in a row. Her sister Marina Doi won the 40 kg/88 lbs.division uncontested. Both compete for the S.D. Hot Beaches club. Three of the other champions won both of their finals matches by pin. At 56 kg/123.25 lbs., Sophie Hertz (Colorado Springs,, Colo./Colorado) pinned Payton Woodall (Plainfield, Ill./Team Illinois) two times. She won the first bout in two periods, 5-1, 1:28 and had a first-period pin in bout two in 1:57. Katie Germain (Lakeland, Fla./Summerlin Judo & Wrestling) scored a pair of pins over Rosemary Flores (New York, N.Y./Team New York) in the finals at 60 kg/132.25 lbs., with falls in 1:39 and 1:27. The champion at 65 kg / 143.25 lbs. was Virginia Burkett (Mountain View, Wyo./Team Wyoming) who pinned Zosima Castaneda (Atlanta, Ga./Team Georgia) both times. Burkett won the first bout in 1:46. In the second match, Castaneda won the first period 4-0, and was leading in the second period when Burkett scored a fall with just six seconds left in the period. Also winning at 70 kg/154 lbs.was Mary Westman (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Team New York), who swept her two bouts over Autumn Rux, Lansing, Mich. (Team Michigan/Domestic Situation). Westman won 3-1, 6-0 in bout one, then scored a second period pin in the second match. There hasn’t been a FILA Cadet World Championship since 1999, so this group of athletes have an exciting new opportunity to compete at the international level.
