UPDATED: Campbell, Davis win golds at Pan American Championships in Colombia

RIONEGRO, Colombia – Two U.S. women wrestlers claimed gold medals at the Pan American Championships on Saturday.

Winning titles were Kelsey Campbell, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Kristie Davis (Oklahoma City, Okla./Gator WC/OCU) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Campbell won four matches on the way to the title. A key victory came in her second match when she defeated 2008 World bronze medalist Brittanee Laverdure of Canada. She beat Jenny Mallqui of Peru, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0 in her final match.

Campbell was fifth in the 2010 World Championships at 59 kg. She recently placed second in the 2011 U.S. Open down at 55 kg.

Davis also had four victories on the way to the title. She defeated 2009 World bronze medalist Justine Bouchard of Canada in the finals, 2-1, 2-0. Davis pinned the first three opponents she faced prior to her bout with Bouchard.

Davis is a two-time World champion and nine-time World medalist. She and Bruce Baumgartner are tied with the most World medals in U.S. history.

Three U.S. wrestlers won silver medals:Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Amanda Hendey (Beaumont, Calif. (San Diego Hot Beaches) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. 

Canada won the team title, followed by the United States and Colombia placed third.

Nicole Woody (Odenton, Md./Gator WC/OCU), placed seventh at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Kendra Lewis (Houston, Texas/Lindenwood Univ.) did not place at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

The U.S. qualified in three of the four women’s weight classes for the 2011 Pan American Games by placing in the top eight in an Olympic weight class: 48 kg. 55 kg and 63 kg.

The U.S. coaches were Katie Cygan of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Celso DeAnda of Marquette, Mich.
