Teyon Ware (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for April 5-11.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Ware was named Outstanding Wrestler in the U.S. Open freestyle competition after winning the title at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. on Saturday night in Cleveland.

The eighth-seeded Ware knocked off No. 1 seed and 2010 World Team member Brent Metcalf in the quarterfinals. He went on to beat past NCAA All-American Kyle Ruschell in the semifinals and two-time World medalist Cary Kolat in the finals.

Ware won his first U.S. Open title and earned a spot in the best-of-3 finals for June’s U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma City.

Ware was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time finalist for Oklahoma.
