World champion Dremiel Byers among semifinalists at U.S. Open

CLEVELAND – Dremiel Byers owns World gold, silver and bronze medals, and has wrestled on a World Championships team.

But the veteran Greco-Roman wrestling standout is back looking for more again this season.

Byers recorded a quick pin over Michael Delaney in the quarterfinals to move a step closer to another U.S. Open title on Friday night at the Cleveland Public Auditorium.

Byers advances to face Steve Andrus in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

The top seven finishers in each weight class advance to June's U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma City.

Byers’ U.S. Army teammate, Harry Lester, also reached the semifinals on Friday. Lester, a two-time World bronze medalist, is back down at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. for the first time since 2008.

Another top Army wrestler, Olympian Spenser Mango, advanced to the semis at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Past World champions Clarissa Chun, Kristie Davis and Iris Smith reached the semifinals in women’s freestyle wrestling on Friday night.

Wrestling will resume with freestyle competition continuing at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cleveland.

The semifinals are set for noon in all three styles with the finals set for Saturday night.
