Two Olympic champions, a World championship silver medalist, and the author of a new wrestling book are this year’s guest presenters for the 2011 Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa induction banquet.
Four former NCAA champions and a historic championship team will be inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa on April 16, 2011. The Hall of Fame is located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo.
The Class of 2011 includes Bill Zadick, Doug Schwab, Jason Smith, Joe Scarpello, and the 1947 Cornell College wrestling team. Steve Knipp will receive the Russ Smith Community Impact Award.
Each inductee will be introduced by a guest presenter. This year’s group of presenters include Dan Gable, Tom Brands, Mike Zadick, Arno Niemand, and Tom Knipp.
Gable, a 1972 Olympic champion and head coach and University of Iowa head wrestling coach from 1977 through 1997, will introduce Joe Scarpello and Jason Smith. Scarpello was an NCAA champion for Iowa in 1947 and 1950. Smith, an NCAA champion in 1969 and 1970, was a teammate with Gable at Iowa State.
Brands, a 1996 Olympic champion and current University of Iowa head wrestling coach, will introduce Doug Schwab. Schwab, a 2008 Olympian and an NCAA champion for Iowa in 1999, was an assistant coach under Brands at Virginia Tech and Iowa. Schwab is currently the head wrestling coach at Northern Iowa.
Mike Zadick is presenting for his brother Bill. The Zadicks won medals together at the World Freestyle Championships in 2006: Bill a gold and Mike a silver. Both wrestled at the University of Iowa, with Bill winning an NCAA title in 1996.
Niemand recently authored a book entitled The Dream Team of 1947 about Cornell College’s NCAA team championship in 1947. The 1947 Cornell College team was the first NCAA championship team from the state of Iowa, and will be the first team inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa.
Steve Knipp will receive the Russ Smith Community Impact Award. His award will be presented by his brother Tom.
The Class of 2011 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 16, 2011. A banquet will be held at Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa. The convention center is located at 205 W. 4th St.
