Bedelyon scored a quick takedown then slapped a cradle on Perrelli, earning the fall at 2:30. Fall for Mango Trailing 3-0 in the second period, seventh-seeded Ryan Mango of Stanford hit a cement mixer on Pittsburgh's Anthony Zanetta to pick up the fall at 125 pounds. Mango will face second-seeded Matt McDonough of Iowa. McDonough beat Michigan's Sean Boyle 14-4. Wolverines! Part Two A second period takedown was all that Utah Valley's Ben Kjar needed to upend fourth-seeded and previously unbeaten James Nicholson of Old Dominion. Kjar came out of a scramble to gain control, chose neutral in the third and fought off Nicholson's attempts to score. Riding Tough Scotti Sentes used a strong second-period ride to build two minutes of riding time and added a third-period escape to knock off sixth-seeded Tony Ramos of Iowa at 133 pounds. It ended up being a big round for the team race at the weight as Cornell's Mike Grey knocked off Virginia Tech's Devin Carter and third-seeded Andrew Long outlasted Minnesota's David Thorn 7-5 in sudden victory. Tough time at 141 for All-Americans Returning All-Americans met at 141 pounds and Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois pinned Virginia Tech's Chris Diaz to advance. ... Missouri's Todd Schavrien upset returning All-American and seventh-seeded Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh 3-1. Caldwell defaults, status doubtful Eric Grajales of Michigan advanced to the quarterfinals with an injury default victory over past NCAA Champion and top-seeded Darrion Caldwell of N.C. State. In a scoreless first period towards the end, Caldwell slowed to get up from the mat after a scramble. Doctors were called to the mat after the trainers attended to Caldwell and the past champion received a sound ovation from the crowd as he was walked off the mat, trainers holding his damaged shoulder in place. It's unlikely Caldwell will return to the tournament. Grajales will face Ganbayar Sanjaa of American in the quartefinals. Sanjaa pinned Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin to advance. Chamberlain rallies Down 3-0 in the third, Boise State's Jason Chamberlin got help from a stalling point to tie his match with Lehigh's Joey Napoli, then scored the winner in sudden victory to advance 6-4. Jenkins rallies, mixes way to quarters Trailing 4-2 against Buffalo's Mark Lewandowski, Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State hit his trademark cement mixer and scored the fall to advance to the semifinals. Jenkins will face Paul Young of Indiana, who was a 9-4 winner over Virginia Tech's #5 seed Jesse Dong. More dominance at 157 The second and third seeds advanced with dominating technical falls as Steve Fittery of American teched John Greisheimer of Edinboro and David Taylor of Penn State did the same to Northern Iowa's David Bonin. The win puts Andrew Long, Andrew Alton, Frank Molinaro and Taylor into the quarterfinals for the Nittany Lions. What Exit? It'll be an all-New Jersey quarterfinal at the top of the bracket at 165 pounds as Nebraska's Jordan Burroughs will face Rutgers' Scott Winston. Burroughs earned an injury default over All-American Justin Lister of Binghamton, while Winston topped Cornell's Justin Kerber in the 8-9 match in the tiebreakers. Got Pride? Hofstra's Paul Gillespie made the quarterfinals for the second time in his career with a 5-2 victory over Peter Yates of Virginia Tech. Gillespie finished in the round of 12 two years ago at 149 pounds. He'll face third-seeded Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma, a 7-2 winner over Donnie Jones of West Virginia. Lions on a Roll Ed Ruth pushed himself into the quarterfinals with a 5-3 win over Big Ten rival Scott Glasser of Minnesota. Ruth will face Stanford's Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford, who was a 6-1 winner over Ohio State's Nick Heflin at 174 pounds. Since Brad Pataky's opening round loss, the Nittany Lions have reeled off 12 straight wins. Back to Back Even though they've taken losses at 125 and 165 this round, Cornell kept pace with back to back falls at 174 and 184. Mack Lewnes pinned Ohio's Nick Purdue, while Steve Bosak pinned Arizona State's Jake Meredith at 184 pounds. Gambrall keeps Iowa in the mix Grant Gambrall of Iowa upended fifth-seeded Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming 8-3 at 184 pounds to advance. LeBlanc tied the match at three in the third, then Gambrall escaped and late in the match, Gambrall took LeBlanc to his back to get two and two and earn the final 8-3 win. The Wright stuff Penn State broadcaster Jeff Byers is sitting behind us at the media table and is keeping tabs on how many wins in a row the Nittany Lions have. Quentin Wright made it 13 in a row with an 8-4 win in the 8-9 match over Minnesota's Kevin Steinhaus. Devlish Duke's Diego Bencomo comes from Arizona, home of Arizona State's Sun Devils. But he was the one bedeviling opponent Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa 12-10 to advance to the quarterfinals unseeded at 184. Bencomo scored numerous takedown in the first and second period and held on to beat Loder 12-10. He's the first Blue Devil wrestler to advance to the quarters since Konrad Dudziak two years ago. Nothing new at 197 All top eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals at 197 pounds. Wade advances, ends perfect round for Nittany Lions Cameron Wade of Penn State avenged a loss at the Big Ten championships and beat #8 Tony Nelson of Minnesota 4-1 to move on at heavyweight. That puts Wade into the quarters with Long, Alton, Molinaro, Taylor, Ruth and Wright. Rey survives scare Zach Rey scored a takedown in sudden victory to move into the quarterfinals and defeat Virginia Tech's David Marone 3-1.
Session 1 Iowa wins two in the pigtails They were tight wins, but Iowa went 2-for-2 in the pigtail round with Tony Ramos beating Lehigh's Frank Cagnina 4-3 at 133 pounds and Grant Gambrall beating Maryland's Corey Peltier 3-2 at 184 pounds. Cagnina scored an early takedown, but Ramos answered with a takedown and two escapes. Rappo tops Morrison in tournament's first upset With a boisterous hometown crowd behind him, Mark Rappo of Penn picked up the day's first upset, beating ninth-seeded Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State. Rappo advances to face Oklahoma's Jarrod Patterson, a 2-1 winner over Boise State's Alan Bartelli. Fast Fall for King Lou Lou Ruggirello of Hofstra registered the fastest fall of the tournament thus far with a 57-second fall over Chattanooga's Demetrius Johnson at 133 pounds. Perrelli survives Cornell's title hopes rest heavily on their lower-seeded and unseeded wrestlers overperforming. Frank Perrelli's late takedown got him past North Dakota State's Trent Sprenkle to advance in the opening round at 125 pounds. Wild at 141 Air Force's lone qualifier, Cole VonOhlen pinned past All-American Chris Drouin of Iowa State in the opening round at 141 pounds. Drouin will face an All-American in the consolations, taking on Cody Cleveland of Chattanooga. Oklahoma's Zack Bailey beat Cleveland 9-7 in sudden victory to advance to face VonOhlen. So statistically -- an All-American will go 0-2 at 141. Wolverines! Flint Ray of Utah Valley picked up a late cradle after working Penn's Rollie Peterkin on top most of the match and picked up three nearfall points to win 7-4 at 133 pounds. Ray will face seventh-seeded B.J. Futrell of Illinois, who picked up a win over Edinboro's Eric Morrill. Avenging the family name In 2006, West Virginia's Brandon Rader pinned Penn's Cesar Grajales in the opening round. Five years later, Rader is wrestling as a senior while a younger Grajales, Eric, is wrestling. Eric Grajales of Michigan pinned Rader Vinson falls to Schmitt The second upset of the morning came at 149 pounds, where Wisconsin's Cole Schmitt beat Binghamton's #9 seed Donnie Vinson. Schmitt worked Vinson tough on top, scoring a takedown and nearfall points to go along with a riding time point. Every point counts Cornell's Kyle Dake showed that every point counts, using a late takedown with a cradle to gain control over Central Michigan's Donnie Corby and earn an 9-0 major decision. The major decision gave Cornell an extra team point with with bonus victory. Molinaro answers Not to be outdone, second-seeded Frank Molinaro picked up a major decision at 149 pounds over Rider's Zac Cibula to keep pace with Dake. Peppelman with a quick cradle North Dakota State's Vince Salminen was a trendy pick for an upset run in the opening rounds, but Harvard's Walter Peppelman derailed many fans' brackets with a 32-second fall over Salmienen. Peppelman's fall is the fastest of the tournament thus far. Top three advance at 157 The trio of unbeaten wrestlers at 157 pounds all advanced to the second round. Top seed Adam Hall of Boise State worked past Cornell's D.J. Meagher 4-1, while second-seeded Steve Fittery of American blitzed Maryland's Kyle John, winning by technical fall. David Taylor of Penn State gave up a quick set of nearfall points, but rolled afterwards to a major decision over Oklahoma State's Neil Erisman. Civan pins Yohn Columbia's Eren Civan scored an upset, beating Minnesota's Cody Yohn by fall in the first period at 165 pounds. Civan locked up a cradle and gave the Lions the fall. Kerber survives with late penalty point Cornell's Justin Kerber moved on at 165 pounds with a 2-1 victory over Clarion's Bekzod Abdurakhmanov. Kerber trailed late in the match and was on bottom, but snatched up Abdurakhmanov's leg to earn an escape. As Abdurakhmanov tried to avoid getting taken down, he was hit for fleeing the mat with 17 seconds to go. Kerber held on after the restart to pick up the victory. Janssen, Bailey fall at 165 pounds Two traditional power programs had wrestlers knocked off in the opening round at 165 pounds. Virginia Tech's Peter Yates used a late takedown to edge Iowa's Aaron Janssen 3-2. Paul Gillespie of Hofstra knocked off the #6 seed, Dallas Bailey of Oklahoma State with a takedown in sudden victory. Gillespie's win is the highest over a seed so far in the first session. LeBlanc will take it In a rematch of November's NWCA All-Star Classic at 184 pounds, Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming scored a defensive fall over Purdue's A.J. Kissel. Kissel had just tied up the match at five, when LeBlanc reached back and held Kissel to the mat for the fall. Loder gets by Clymer Northern Iowa's Ryan Loder got past Hofstra's Ben Clymer in the tiebreakers at 184 pounds. This moves two Western Wrestling Conference wrestlers into the second round at the weight. Cooper with the upset The first top-four seed went down in the first session's last weight. Levi Cooper of Arizona State scored a third-period reversal to go up 4-2 on Rutgers' D.J. Russo and that's how it ended. Cooper started his career at Portland State, then to Cal State-Bakersfield, but transferred when Bakersfield briefly dropped their program. Now at his third school in three years, Cooper gets his first win at the NCAA Championships.
