In 31 years, Pittsburgh head wrestling coach Rande Stottlemyer has accomplished a lot. He’s coached wrestlers to NCAA Championships, been one of the leaders in the Eastern Wrestling League, but one thing has escaped his grasp – an EWL tournament championship.

Stottlemyer can officiall cross that to-do item off his list, as six Panthers won championships on Sunday night at the EWL Championships at Nelson Fieldhouse in Bloomsburg, Pa.

Pittsburgh’s Anthony Zanetta got things started, using a third period takedown to top West Virginia’s Shane Young for the championship at 125 pounds.

At 133 pounds, Edinboro’s Eric Morrill and West Virginia’s Nathan Pennesi needed extra time to decide the champion. After the two traded escapes in regulation, but Morrill snatched up a leg and finished a takedown with 11 seconds left in sudden victory.

Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh captured the championship at 141 pounds, besting Lock Haven’s Matt Bonson 6-4. Bonson took an early lead and nearly got a tilt, but Nauman scrapped back and took the lead with 20 seconds left to go in the second period off a takedown in a scramble initiated by Nauman’s offense.

Nauman would score a third period takedown after Bonson chose neutral. Bonson would score a reversal in the closing seconds for the final 6-4 margin.

Pittsburgh’s Dane Johnson finished his Cinderella run at 149 pounds by using a late takedown to knock off West Virginia’s Brandon Rader 3-1. Johnson knocked off the tournament’s top seed, Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro, in the semifinals. Coming in 16-16, Johnson gave Pittsburgh its fourth champion in as many tries.

James Fleming of Clarion dominated Frank Hickman of Bloomsburg, cranking and tilting and earning his way to a technical fall at 157 pounds. Fleming, a sophomore, improved to 30-2 on the season.

Mike Dessino of Bloomsburg took the only bid at 174 pounds with an overtime victory over West Virginia’s Alex Meade. Dessino nearly finished a takedown at the end of regulation, but after the officials conferred, it was waved off. Dessino doubled Meade and dropped him to the mat for the win.

Chris Honeycutt remained undefeated, capturing the championship for Edinboro at 184 pound. Honeycutt was never threatened in a 7-2 victory over Pittsburgh’s Max Thomusseit.

While brother Max fell at 184, Zac Thomusseit captured the championship for Pittsburgh at 197 pounds with a sound 6-4 decision over Edinboro’s Shawn Fendone. Both wrestlers qualify for the NCAA championship.

Pittsburgh ended the day with a sixth champion – heavyweight Ryan Tomei. Tomei bested Bloomsburg’s Zac Walsh 8-2. He improved to 27-4 on the season. His final was the
