Semifinal Notes
125 Summary
Top-seeded James Nicholson of Old Dominion used a second period cradle to pin Boston University’s Chris McGinley at 3:43. Nicholson reaches his fourth career CAA championship match. He remains undefeated on the season. … Hofstra’s Steve Bonanno reached the finals with a 6-5 victory over sixth-seeded Derek Steeley of Binghamton. Bonanno finished a takedown with 45 seconds to go in the second period to break a 4-4 tie. Steeley escape with 10 to go and nearly gained a takedown at the buzzer, but there was no takedown, despite the extremely close finish.

133 Summary
Top-seeded Lou Ruggirello of Hofstra used a powerful bar series to crank over Drexel’s Frank Cimato and finished with a fall at 1:47 with a deep half-nelson. Like Nicholson, this is also Ruggirello’s fourth finals appearance. … Kyle Hutter of Old Dominion moved into the finals with a 6-3 victory over Fred Santaite of Boston U. Hutter scored takedowns in the first and third period.

141 Summary
Two first period takedowns was all Hofstra’s Vincente Varela needed to oust Old Dominion’s Brennan Brumley 5-3 … Second-seeded Anwar Goeres of Binghamton wasted little time pinning Rider’s Aaron Nestor at 1:11 of the first period.

149 Summary
Like Goeres at 149, Binghamton’s Donnie Vinson got things over quickly, hitting Old Dominion’s Joey Metzler with a headlock seconds into the match and getting the fall in 19 seconds. … Second-seeded Zac Cibula of Rider advanced to the finals with a sound 4-1 victory over Boston University’s Nestor Taffur.

157 Summary
Matt Kaylor of Binghamton dominated from start to finish, scoring four first period takedowns en route to a 14-4 major decision over George Mason’s Jaaziah Bethea. … Trailing 3-0 in the third, Rider’s Ramon Santiago upended second-seeded Tyler Banks of Hofstra 7-4. Santiago took Banks to his back and secured a late takedown to ice the win in the closing seconds.

165 Summary
While only seeded fourth, Binghamton’s Justin Lister continued the Bearcat fall parade with a cradle, pinning top-seeded Joe Booth of Drexel at 2:38. … Hofstra’s Paul Gillespie used a takedown and three nearfall early in the first period to build a 5-0 lead off a slick throw and then scored two third-period takedowns to dispense with Rider’s Jim Resnick 9-1.

174 Summary
Boston University’s fourth-seeded Hunter Meys upset top-seeded Rob Morrison of Rider 10-6 in sudden victory. Morrison earned an escape with 10 seconds to go to forge a 6-6 tie, and off a Meys shot in the extra period, the two got into a scramble, which Meys ended up on top with a headlock, gaining two for the takedown and two more for nearfall. … Ryan Patrovich of Hofstra moved into the finals, beating Binghamton’s Ryan McGarity 4-1.

184 Summary
In two relatively low-octane semifinals, Binghamton’s Nate Schiedel and Hofstra’s Ben Clymer each advanced to the finals. Schiedel built nearly three minutes of riding time in a 5-1 win over Boston U.’s Brock Mantella, while Clymer continued his mastery over Old Dominion’s Joe Budi, earning a 5-2 victory.

197 Summary
Boston University’s John Hall built a 10-1 lead heading into the semifinals and bruised his way into the finals with a third-period fall at 6:10 over Hofstra’s Matt Loew. … Brandon Palik of Drexel tied his semifinal with Binghamton’s John Paris with 15 seconds to go, but injury time stopped the match for Paris’ knee tweak. On the restart, Paris reversed Palik to his back and nearly got the fall, but got the win 8-3 to give Binghamton its sixth finalist.

285 Summary
Hofstra pushed its sixth wrestler into the finals with Paul Snyder’s marathon 4-3 tiebreaker victory over Old Dominion’s Grant Chapman. Snyder will face second-seeded Jack Callender of Drexel, an 8-6 winner over Binghamton’s Cody Reed.

First Session Notes
Up for grabs
The CAA has 17 automatic bids allocated before the wild card meetings next week. The bid breakout is as follows: 125 (2), 133 (3), 141 (1), 149 (2), 157 (1), 165 (3), 174 (2), 184 (1), 197 (1), 285 (1).

First match, first upset
Derek Steeley of Binghamton used a reversal and three point nearfall to start the third period to erase a 3-1 deficit and ended up taking a 7-3 victory over third-seeded Chuck Zeisloft of Rider. Steeley was the sixth-seed, while Zeisloft was the third.

No upset here
After giving up two quick takedowns to unseeded Jordan Frease of Boston U., Hofstra’s Vincente Varela poured it on, scoring a pair takedowns and a painful set of nearfall points to take a 9-4 lead into the third period. Varela eventually ended up earning a 16-4 major decision to advance at 141 pounds.

Taffur prevails for Terriers
#6 Nestor Taffur picked up a takedown halfway into sudden victory to knock off third-seeded Brandon Bucher of George Mason. It was the second straight overtime loss for George Mason. Rider’s Aaron Nestor stopped Denny Herndon 3-1 in sudden victory at 141 pounds.

Cradle time
All-American Justin Lister of Binghamton came into the CAA Championships as only the fourth seed. After moving up to 165 at midseason, Lister initially struggled with the weight, but in the first round on Friday, Lister cradled and pinned Boston U.’s Kyle Czarnecki. He’ll face top-seeded Joe Booth of Drexel in the semifinals.

More bad news for George Mason
What’s been a forgettable season for George Mason seems to be getting worse. After limping through the dual meet season without a victory, the Patriots appear to have lost 184-pounder Bagna Tovuujav for the rest of the tournament. Tovuujav was wrestling Boston U.’s Brock Mantella when he was forced to injury default with what appeared to be a dislocated elbow. Tovuujav is a two-time NCAA qualifier.
