UPDATE: Missouri Valley and Notre Dame tied after first session at NAIA Nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -Missouri Valley and Notre Dame (Ohio) each racked up 27 points in the first session to lead the team standings at the 2011 NAIA Wrestling National Championships Thursday in the U.S. Cellular Center. 

Thursday’s second session will have one round of consolation matches, followed by the second and third-round championship bouts starting at 6:30 p.m. CST. 

Missouri Valley has 10 of its 12 wrestlers through in the championship bracket, while the defending national champion Falcons have 11 on the championship side. Southern Oregon is third with 26 points, followed by McKendree (Ill.) in fourth with 23 points. Tied for fifth place with 22 points are Campbellsville (Ky.) and Morningside (Iowa). 

Thursday’s opening session saw 311 wrestlers take to the mat, with 46 grapplers wining by fall, 30 notching a major decision and six putting on an offensive show, winning by technical fall.
