Jacobson wins silver, Fulp-Allen, Smith and Betts take bronzes in Bulgaria

BOURGAS, Bulgaria – The United States captured four medals during the second day of competition Nikola Petrov and Dan Kolov Internationals on Saturday.

Winning a silver medal in women’s freestyle was Sharon Jacobson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Winning bronze medals in women’s freestyle were Katherine Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

Winning a bronze medal in Greco-Roman was Chas Betts (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Jacobson won two bouts to reach the finals, stopping Violeta Simeonova of Bulgaria, 4-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then defeating American Katherine Fulp-Allen in the semifinals, 1-0, 5-1. She was pinned in the third period in the finals by 2010 World University bronze medalist Hafize Sahin of Turkey.

Fulp-Allen finished with a 2-1 record for her bronze medal. After losing to Jacobson in the semifinals, she rebounded to pin Violeta Simeonova of Bulgaria in the bronze-medal match.

Smith, a 2005 World champion, finished with a 2-2 record in a five athlete roundrobin. She lost her first two bouts, but rebounded with two straight wins to capture the bronze.

Betts opened with two wins, stopping Boyan Zagorov of Bulgaria, 1-0, 1-0 and C.J. Meyers of the United States, 1-0, 1-0. He was defeated in the semifinals by two-time African champion Achouri Haikel of Tunisia, 1-0, 0-2, 0-2.

Betts came back to win his bronze-medal bout over 2010 European Junior bronze medalist Stanislav Kunev of Bulgaria, 1-0, 6-0.

Betts was a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team.

The U.S. has now won seven medals in the first two days of the competition. Four more U.S. athletes will compete on Sunday.
