UPDATED: Fulp-Allen wins silver, Ruiz and Lucas win bronzes in Bulgaria

BOURGAS, Bulgaria – The Bulgarian Wrestling Federation has reported on the medalists on the opening day of the Nikola Petrov and Dan Kolov Internationals on Friday.

Three U.S. wrestlers won medals.

In women’s freestyle, Sara Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) captured a silver medal at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Othella Lucas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) claimed a bronze medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

In Greco-Roman, 2005 World bronze medalist Justin Ruiz (Boise, Idaho/New York AC) won a bronze medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Fulp-Allen competed in a round-robin with three other athletes, placing second in the standings behind Isabel Sambou of Senegal, who defeated her, 1-3, 0-1. Fulp-Allen scored wins over Nadine Tokar of Switzerland, 3-3, 2-0 and Melek Atakol of Turkey, 1-0, 6-0.

Lucas lost her first match to Elina Vaseva of Bulgaria, 0-3, 0-2, but rebounded to beat Mihaela Panait of Romania in a bronze-medal bout.

According to the Bulgaria Federation website, Ruiz lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Elis Guri of Bulgaria, then wrestled back in the repechage to win his remaining matches and claim third.

Six American Greco-Roman wrestlers and three American women’s freestyle wrestlers competed on Friday. Updates are provided below.

There was also a men’s freestyle division being contested, but the United States did not enter any athletes in that style.
