WATERLOO, Iowa - The first female to qualify for the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament will be honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
Cassy Herkelman, a freshman competing for Cedar Falls High School, qualified for the state wrestling tournament at 112 pounds. She currently attends Peet Junior High.
Herkelman will be honored during the African American Wrestling Experience event the museum is hosting that evening. Five prominent African American wrestlers, including Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson, will be on hand for a panel discussion.
“Cassy qualifying for the Iowa high school state tournament is a historic first for wrestling,†said Kyle Klingman, director of the Dan Gable Museum. “Honoring her during a celebration of diversity makes sense.â€
Dan Gable, namesake of the museum, will be in attendance.
The event will be broadcast live on Live Sports Video (www.livesportsvideo.com), an online resource for extracurricular activities.
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is located at 303 Jefferson St. in Waterloo. For more information contact the museum at (319) 233-0745 or at info@wrestlingmuseum.org.
