The first national event of the 2011 USA Wrestling season is the Girls Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 25-27. National competition is set for the Junior, Cadet, Schoolgirl and two youth divisions.

In its fifth year, this event has grown in size and prestige, and provides a fitting finish to the annual girls folsktyle season.

“It’s the only main folkstyle tournament within USA Wrestling for the women and it’s at the end of their high school and folkstyle seasons. It’s a culmination of that season,” said USA Wrestling Women’s freestyle coach Terry Steiner said.

“It’s a huge event for us,” said Steiner. “It’s one we really put on our radar to start looking and seeing talent so we can get them into camps and around USA Wrestling staff and national team members. It starts opening doors for these athletes they might not have known existed.”

The Junior division features many of the best high school wrestlers in the nation, the athletes often move on to compete in the college and Olympic levels. Nine Junior champions eligible to return this year, including ASICS High School Wrestler of the Year Jenna Burkert of New York at 138 lbs, plus ASICS First Team members Erin Golston of Illinois at 102 lbs and Kayla Brendlinger of Pennsylvania at 109 lbs.
