Carlene Sluberski wins second USOEC Athlete of the Month Award

Carlene Sluberski, a sophomore at Northern Michigan University and member of USA Wrestling’s freestyle resident program won the USOEC’s Athlete of the Month award for January. This is the second time that she has the won the award, the first in November 2010.

Sluberski is the first athlete to win this award twice in a season. She was nominated by her coach, Shannyn Gillespie after her silver medal performance at the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals in Atherton, Calif. on Jan. 29.

“It is the first time it’s ever happened. I’m happy for Carlene and I hope that it can motivate her,” Gillespie said. “She’s more than an average student. She’s an exceptional student and an exceptional athlete.”

Because of her performance at the WCWA Nationals, Sluberski competed at the 2nd Annual Shaheed Bhagat Singh International tournament in India. She finished fifth at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. She also wrestles at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. on the Senior level and is currently ranked fifth in the country at 48 kg.
