STILLWATER, Okla. – Fourth-ranked Oklahoma State turned in a solid mid-February performance on Friday night, beating No. 8 Boise State, 28-6.

The Cowboys (13-2-1) won eight of the 10 bouts, including top-ranked Jordan Oliver’s victory over No. 2 Andrew Hochstrasser at 133; Jamal Parks’ overtime win over previously unbeaten Jason Chamberlain at 149; and rookie Chris Perry’s injury-default win over top-ranked Kirk Smith at 184.

“It was a good outing,” said OSU head coach John Smith, whose squad hosts No. 24 Wyoming on Sunday. “We got really tough in the second and third period when we needed to. Those are the things you hope for. (Boise) is a tough, senior-led team that’s been together awhile.

“It was a pretty good effort on our part but not without flaws.”

Oliver and Hochstrasser entered Friday with a combined 32 bonus-point wins in 40 bouts. Oliver, a sophomore, edged the BSU senior at the NWCA All-Star Classic last November. This time around Oliver (20-0) used a slick ankle pick for a 2-0 lead early in the bout, then a nice arm drag in the final 35 seconds to secure the win. Hochstrasser (21-1) put up over a minute of riding time in his favor in the second before an Oliver escape sent it to the third at 3-1. 

The match included a nice flurry of activity in the final 10 seconds of the first period initiated by Oliver and a near Hochstrasser reversal in the closing seconds that had the Boise State bench on its feet. An escape made it 3-2 but again Oliver got to the leg and finished.

“I knew going in nothing was going to be given,” said Oliver. “I knew the key was going to be my takedowns and getting off bottom. He is really good on the mat so I knew I had to get away in that second period.

“I thought he might try and go a high pace but not really put himself in bad position. I was able to get to that first single leg and finish my shot. I would have liked to finish that shot in the second to go up 4-1 into the third but he’s tough to score on. I was able to score when it counted, late in the match.”

Perry (20-4) used a solid cross-body ride to ride out the second period against top-ranked Kirk Smith at 184 pounds. Smith, obviously in pain throughout the second half of the period, tried to make a go of it after taking his full injury timeout in between periods. Fifteen seconds into the final stanza, however, Smith fell to the mat and could not continue.

“That’s not the way you want to win a match,” admitted Perry. “He walked off the mat with an injury. It’s unfortunate. I wanted to finish the match because it was a big match in a big environment.

“It’s a good start to a tough weekend, a grind.”

Perry gets Wyoming’s Joe LeBlanc on Sunday afternoon.

Parks (21-3), ranked seventh, couldn’t finish an arm-drag at the second period whistle but used a quick duck-under 26 seconds into overtime to beat No. 3 Jason Chamberlain at 149 pounds. It was Chamberlain’s first loss in 22 matches this season.

Boise State (10-3-1) got victories from Adam Hall at 157 and Alan Bartelli at 125.

Bartelli, one of six senior starters for the Broncos, improved to 15-7 and was never threatened in beating No. 7 Jon Morrison, 6-1. The Bronco senior rode out the third period, coupled with a pair of takedowns.

The unbeaten and third-ranked Hall (22-0) drew the visitors to within 12-6 – the dual started at 285 pounds – with a tough 8-2 decision of Neil Erisman at 157 pounds. But another OSU rookie, Dallas Bailey, improved to 20-5 with an uneventful 4-1 decision of Kurt Swartz at 165 to put the hosts back up 15-6.

The lead moved to 18-6 after Mike Benefiel’s 4-3 victory over Jake Swartz at 174.

The dual included a great match at 141 between OSU rookie Josh Kindig and BSU sophomore Josh Strait. Kindig (21-6) tied the bout at 3-3 with a duck-under at the second period buzzer, then finished things off with a spectacular headlock for five to pull away 10-5 in the final 15 seconds. Earlier in the third Kindig, in a double over-hook, and Strait, with a bear-hug, had a battle of wills that saw both men go to their backs momentarily.

The 206-pound Blake Rosholt started the dual off with a solid 6-0 victory over fellow freshman J.T. Felix at 285 pounds. Rosholt (7-5) opened with a first-period takedown and totaled 3:42 of riding time.

Boise State, now 0-5 all-time against Oklahoma State, returns to action Feb. 27 at the Pac-10 Championships in Corvallis, Ore.

OSU hosts alum Mark Branch and Wyoming on Sunday before finishing against rival Oklahoma on Feb. 20 in Norman in a dual that will be Sooner coach Jack Spates’ final as head coach.
