JALANDHAR CITY, India – The United States won no medals on the second day of the 2011 Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament on Friday.

Two U.S. wrestlers were in competition, Marty Usman (Colorado Springs/GRIT Athletics) at 84 kg/185 lbs. in men’s freestyle, and Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y./USOEC) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. in women’s freestyle.

Usman opened with a close three-period loss to Manjit of India, 4-0, 3-4, 1-5. He won the first period and was in control in the second period when he was hit with a caution and one point penalty with just one second left, forcing a third period which he lost.

In his repechage bout, Usman dropped another close bout to Johny of India, 1-3, 4-3, 0-1.

Usman, a USOTC freestyle resident athlete, was a Div. II national champion for UN-Kearney.

Sluberski dropped her only match, falling to Anju Choudray of India, 0-1, 4-3, 2-0. Choudry was third in 2009 Asian Junior Championships. When Choudray failed to reach the finals, Sluberski was not eligible for the repechage rounds.

Sluberski competes for the USOEC program at Northern Michigan University, and was second at the 2011 WCWA Women’s College Nationals.

“We had no medals today,” said U.S. coach Dr. Dave Bennett. “Hopefully we will have a better day tomorrow.”

Three U.S. athletes compete will on Saturday: Ashley Hudson (Wildwood, Mo./OCU/Gator WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Melissa Simmons (Ridgefield, Wa./OCU/Gator WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle, plus Joe Johnston (Columbia, Mo./MWF) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle.

The USA had two medals on Thursday, with Wynn Michalak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) taking a silver at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle and Nicole Woody (Odenton, Md./OCU/Gator WC) taking a bronze at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
