COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Deanna Rix loves wrestling at home.

Rix turned in another superb performance in the place she lives and trains by winning her third straight Dave Schultz Memorial International Open title on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Rix downed Canada’s Amanda Gerhart 1-0, 1-0 to win the women’s freestyle title at 59 kg/130 lbs.

“I love this tournament because it’s on our home turf,” said Rix, who placed fifth in the World in 2008 and 2009. “It means a lot to me winning it here.”

Rix made a strong return to the mat after being out with an injury.

“I’m coming off hip surgery, so I’m just getting back in the swing of things and getting back in shape,” Rix said. “I’m still not 100 percent yet, but I felt pretty good."

Rix earned a tough win over Gerhart in the finals battle.

“I could have been a little more offensive,” Rix said. “I was kind of relying on my defense.”

Americans Whitney Conder and Tatiana Padilla finished second.

Conder dropped a 1-1, 1-0 decision to Canada’s Jessica MacDonald in the finals at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.

Padilla fell 1-0, 1-0 to two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek of Canada in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Padilla is a two-time World bronze medalist. Verbeek won her third title in this event.

Poland’s Iwona Matkowska was named Outstanding Wrestler. She downed Olympic champion Carol Huynh of Canada 1-0, 1-0 in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Canada won the team title. The Sunkist Kids finished second.

World silver medalist Elena Pirozkhova scored three quick points on a headlock before being rolled through and pinned by World champion Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia in the semifinals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Soronzonbold won a World title at 59 kg/130 lbs. in 2010 while Pirozhkova was second in the World at 63 kilos. Pirozhkova came back to place third.

The three-day event concluded on Saturday with another strong international field on display.
