Padilla, Maroulis, Pirozhkova top list of semifinalists at Dave Schultz Memorial International Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The loaded Dave Schultz Memorial International weight class at 55 kg/121 lbs. has the feel of a World Championships.

Just check out the glowing resumes of the four women’s freestyle wrestlers who reached the semifinals on Saturday morning.

Two-time World medalist Tatiana Padilla of the United States will face four-time World champion Anna Gomis of France in one semifinal.

Two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek of Canada will meet two-time Junior World medalist Helen Maroulis of the U.S. in the other semifinal. Verbeek has won this tournament twice.

The semifinals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with the finals to follow at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova of the U.S. advanced to face World champion Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia in the semifinals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Soronzonbold won Worlds at 59 kg/130 lbs. last year while Pirozhkova was second in the World at 63 kilos.

World champion and Olympian Clarissa Chun suffered a three-period loss to Canada’s Ashley McKilligan in the second round at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

World Team member Deanna Rix reached the semis at 59 kilos. She is seeking her third straight title in this event.

Olympic champion Carol Huynh of Canada reached the semifinals at 48 kilos. Huynh is seeking her fourth Schultz title.
