With the tentative rosters in for 23 countries submitted, the 2011 Dave Schultz Memorial International Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. is turning out to be a showcase of international talent. The event is set for Sports Center I from Feb. 3-5. Many of the athletes expected to participate are World and Olympic medalists in all three Olympic styles of wrestling: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Greco-Roman stars include 2008 Olympic Champion Andrea Minguzzi of Italy at 84 kg/185 lbs and 2010 World Champion Histro Marinov of Bulgaria at 84 kg/185 lbs. In addition, U.S. World champions in the field include 2006 World champion Joe Warren at 60 kg/132 lbs. and 2002 World champion Dremiel Byers at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. The Greco-Roman competition will be on Thursday, February 3. A number of World and Olympic silver medalists are in the men’s freestyle field, which will be contested on Friday, February 4. Japan’s Tomohiro Matsunaga, a 2008 Olympic silver medalist, is expected at 55 kg/121 lbs. World silver medalist Naranbaatar Bayaraa of Mongolia is among the preliminary entries. 2008 Olympic champion Carol Huyhn of Canada leads the women’s field, which completes the competition on Saturday, February 5. Anna Gomis of France, a four-time World champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist is slated to wrestle at 55 kg/121 lbs. American stars include four-time World champion Kristie Davis at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and 2008 World champion Clarissa Chun at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and 2005 World champion Iris Smith at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Other World gold medalists expected are 2010 World Champion Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia at 59 kg/130 lbs and 2007 World Champion Audrey Prieto-Bokhashvili of France also at 59 kg/130 lbs. Expected U.S. Greco-Roman athletes Harry Lester at 66 kg and Justin Ruiz at 96 kg have been three-time champions. The tournament received preliminary entries from 23 countries: Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, United States and Uzbekistan.
