KRASNOYARSK, Russia – The United States had a strong day on Sunday, the final day of competition at the highly respected Ivan Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix.

It was previously reported that Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Dlagnev opened with a win over Alan Dzampaev of Russia, then was defeated in his second round by eventual runner-up Barzaga Kesaev of Russia, when he was caught and pinned. He battled back through the repechage rounds to claim a bronze medal.

Four other U.S. wrestlers placed fifth on Sunday, Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs., Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Les Sigman (State College, Pa/Nittany Lion WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. and Tommy Rowlands, Columbus, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Herbert, a 2009 World silver medalist, lost to two outstanding Russian wrestlers, Anzor Urishev in the round of 16 and Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia in the bronze-medal match. Herbert was in deep on a winning takedown against Urishev as time ran out.

Two U.S. wrestlers reached the semifinals, Varner at 96 kg and Rowlands at 120 kg.

Varner, a 2009 U.S. World Team member, was winning his semifinal match, but was hurt while executing a double leg takedown on eventual champion Shamil Akhmedov of Russia. He did not compete in his bronze-medal match to place fifth.

Rowlands, who was fifth in the 2007 World Championships, was winning in his semifinal bout, but defeated by pin in the third period. Like Varner, he did not compete in the third place bout due to injury and finished fifth.

Sigman, a 2010 U.S. World Team member, was defeated in the quarterfinals by 2008 Olympic silver medalist Bakhtiyar Akhmedov of Russia, and fell in his bronze-medal match.

The other U.S. wrestlers competing on Sunday did not qualify for the medal rounds, Raymond Jordan (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) and Andy Hrovat, Cleveland, Ohio (New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. plus J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) placed fifth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. on Friday. The United States put six wrestlers into medal matches, with the lone bronze medal coming from Dlagnev. This was a vast improvement from the last two years at the Yarygin International, when the U.S. had only one athlete in medal rounds in 2009 and none in 2010.

Updated bout-by-bout results will be posted when received.

A group of five U.S. wrestlers will travel on to Ulan Ude, Russia to compete in the Buryatia Republic’s President’s Cup on Feb. 4-6. National Coach Zeke Jones will lead the delegation.
