Final WCWA women’s college individual rankings released

Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser, a Junior World champion from the United States, is a returning WCWA champion and holds a No. 1 ranking going into the WCWA Nationals at Menlo on Saturday.

The final individual rankings of the year have been released for the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association.

The WCWA Nationals will be held at Menlo College on Saturday, January 29.

Four returning WCWA national champions hold No. 1 rankings going into the tournament: Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Helen Maroulis of Simon Fraser at 55 kg/121 lbs., Danielle Lappage of Simon Fraser at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Britteny Delgado of Oklahoma City at 80 kg/176 lbs.

Defending WCWA champions Oklahoma City has the most No. 1 athletes going into the tournament with five: Delgado, plus Nicole Woody at 44 kg/97 lbs., Ashley Hudson at 59 kg/130 lbs., Kristie Davis at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Mellisa Simmons at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

Davis, a two-time World champion and nine-time World medalist, is competing in her first WCWA Nationals. Simmons was a 2008 WCWA National champion 

Other top ranked wrestlers going into the national tournament are Carlene Sluberski of the USOEC program at Northern Michigan at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Marina Lambert of King College at 90 kg/198 lbs.

Two athletes who have won two WCWA National titles in their career are ranked No. 2 in their weights, Michaela Hutchinson of Oklahoma City at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Hillary Greening of Simon Fraser at 90 kg/198 lbs. Both were champions in both 2009 and 2010.

Hutchison is ranked behind Maroulis, putting two returning champions at the 55 kg/121 lbs. weight class. Greening, who has moved up a weight from where she won last year, is behind Lambert, who is wrestling in her first WCWA Nationals.
