U.S. women wrestlers to compete at Guelph Open in Canada on January 22

A number of U.S. women freestyle wrestlers will travel to Canada to compete in the Guelph Open in Guelph, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, January 22. 

The tournament is considered one of the top women’s events in Canada each year. There will also be a men’s freestyle division held at the annual competition.

A group of athletes who train full-time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center will participate in the tournament.

Expected to compete are 2010 U.S. World Team members Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. 

Also making the trip are U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes Sara Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 48 kg/105.5.lbs., Katherine Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 51 kg/114.5.lbs., and Trinity Plessinger (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. All have been members of past U.S. age-group World teams, and Katherine Fulp-Allen is a past University World champion.

2008 Olympian Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Gator WC), a 2009 U.S. World Team member, may also compete in Guelph at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

In addition, a number of women wrestlers from the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan will also compete in Canada.

Included in the group is 2001 U.S. World Team member Jenna Pavlik, Lewes, Del. (New York AC/USOEC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.  Past Junior World Team members Erin Golston, Lake In the Hills, Ill. (USOEC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Schuyler Brown, Montpelier, Va. (Gator WC/USOEC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. will also compete. Jenna Burkert, Rocky Point, N.Y. (New York AC/USOEC), a member of the 2010 U.S. Youth Olympic Games team, is expected to wrestle at 59 kg/130 lbs. 

Athletes weigh in on Friday, January 21, with competition beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22.

Additional U.S. athletes may compete in either the women’s or men’s division, as this is an open competition.
