Chun places second & Betterman takes third in USOC Twitter vote for Athlete of the Month

Women’s freestyle wrestler Clarissa Chun placed second and Greco-Roman wrestler Joe Betterman placed third in the U.S. Olympic Committee Twitter voting for Male & Female Athletes of the Month for December 2010.

Chun placed second in the women’s vote behind cycling athlete Katie Compton. Compton had 442 votes for 22%, while Chun had 344 votes for 17%. Placing right behind Chun in third was Heather Reutter of Short Track Speedskating with 319 votes for 16%. There were 15 female athletes nominated by their sport.

In December, Chun, a 2008 World champion, won a gold medal at the prestigious Open Cup of Russia, beating four tough Russian opponents.

Betterman placed third in the men’s vote behind short track speedskater Jeff Simon and gymnast Paul Ruggeri. Simons won the poll with 426 votes for 25% of the vote. Ruggeri was second with 373 votes for 22% of the vote. Betterman was third with 303 votes for 18% of the vote. There were 19 male athletes nominated by their sport.

In December, Betterman, a 2007 World Team member, won a gold medal at the Haparanda Cup in Sweden, winning five bouts against top international opponents.

The Twitter voting for fans accounts for 10% of the selection process for the Athletes of the Month. The final selection will be announced within a few days.
