Taylor Escamilla (Fremont, Neb./University of Nebraska at Omaha) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 4-10.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Escamilla, a junior heavyweight, delivered match-clinching wins against Newberry and Augustana to boost top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha to its third straight Division II team title at the National Duals on Sunday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Escamilla downed Newberry’s Jake Elkins 2-1 in overtime to lift the Mavericks to a 19-16 win in the semifinals. He followed with a 3-1 win over Augustana’s Lance Peters to rally UNO to a dramatic 17-15 win in the finals.

Escamilla stepped into the lineup after replacing returning national champion Elijah Madison. He lost his first two matches at the National Duals before coming back to deliver his two clutch victories.

Escamilla originally committed to play football at the University of Nebraska before transferring to Nebraska-Omaha to wrestle.
