IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa Hawkeyes reached another milestone on Friday night.

They extended their school-record winning streak to 69 straight wrestling matches.

Seventh-ranked Iowa won all 10 matches in a 49-0 rout over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville before 6,486 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa’s winning streak is tied for the second-longest in NCAA history. Oklahoma State won 76 straight duals from 1937-51.

“When we made the decision not to go to the National Duals, this meet was important this weekend,” Iowa coach Tom Brands said. “With a team like Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, we flexed our muscles when we needed to, but we have to do that against better teams as well.”

National champion Matt McDonough started the onslaught at 125 pounds with a quick first-period pin and the Hawkeyes continued to roll after that.

Iowa (8-0) travels to face No. 2 Oklahoma State on Jan. 16 in Stillwater.

“We’ve got a big dual meet next Sunday,” Brands said. “It’s not a secret that we have to gear up for it. From the outside looking in, it may be a mismatch by the rankings. But we have to be ready to go down there and put it to some guys because we didn’t do that this past weekend. We need to step up to a bigger challenge and next week is a bigger challenge.”

Southern Illinois fell to 1-7.
