The Kiki Cup, an international Greco-Roman dual meet competition, will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday, January 29.
This event was previously known as the Kit Carson Cup, which was held in Colorado Springs, Colo. in 2005, 2006 and 2010.
The nations participating in the 2011 Kiki Cup will be the host United States, Bulgaria, Japan, Poland and a team from Scandinavia (featuring wrestlers from Sweden and Norway).
The United States will have four different teams, representing club programs from across the nation and featuring numerous Greco-Roman national team athletes.
The U.S. teams are: 1. U.S. Army; 2. New York Athletic Club; 3. Sunkist Kids & Minnesota Storm: 4. U.S. Olympic Education Center – Northern Michigan University.
The U.S. teams will not compete against each other, but will have dual meets against the four international squads. Likewise, none of the foreign teams will wrestle each other, but will have a dual meet against each U.S. team.
“The day promises to be a very productive and beneficial day for our U.S. Team,†said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. “The fact that each U.S. wrestler will get to wrestle each foreign team member, win or lose, is very good for our preparation and development.â€
Christina ‘Kiki’ Kelley is the new sponsor of the event.
“We changed the name to the Kiki Cup because we thought it would be a good way to honor Kiki for her generous donation to our organization,†said Fraser. “She is planning on attending with her family and friends. Her father and brother both were wrestlers.â€
Sessions 1 & 2 will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Sessions 3 & 4 will take place from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. TheMat.com will provide a live webcast from the event.
Most of the competitors in the event will be competing in the Greco-Roman division at the annual Dave Schultz Memorial International, set for the U.S. Olympic Training Center on Thursday, Feb. 3.
Lineups for the U.S. teams and the international teams will be announced at a later date.
