Luvsandorj named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week

Charleston, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced on Wednesday that The Citadel’s Turtogtokh Luvsandorj has been named the Wrestler of the Week for all competitions from December 15 – January 4. Luvsandorj   (Ulaanbaatar,   Mongolia)   sported   a   9-1   record   in   his   last   two   competitions   in December. In the SoCon opening dual, the 165-pounder downed Davidson’s Tyler Mullen, 3-2, to guide the Bulldogs to a 29-9 win. In  the  prestigious  Southern  Scuffle,  Luvsandorj  placed  third  at  165  pounds,  going  8-1  and defeating two nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-3 decision over No. 5 Paul Gillespie of Hofstra in the third-place match. He also downed No. 26 Thomas Scotton of North Carolina and pinned Utah Valley’s Jeb Clark along the way to improve his season record to 23-4. With the two wins over ranked opponents, the sophomore has now topped five ranked opponents this season and has climbed into the top-10 in several national rankings. 

Trice Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan junior heavyweight Jarod Trice (Highland Park, Mich./Highland Park HS) has been named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Trice finished runner-up at the 2010 Midlands Championships after entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed. He won five straight matches before falling to the No. 1 seed, Lehigh's Zach Rey, in the finals. Along the way, Trice defeated the No. 3 seed, D.J. Russo (Rutgers), in the quarterfinals by a 9-3 decision and the No. 2 seed, Ryan Tomei (Pittsburgh), in the semifinals by a 2-1 decision. He was one of four CMU medalists at the event, helping the Chippewas to a seventh-place finish in the 44-team field.

Trice advanced to the Midlands finals for a second consecutive season after winning the heavyweight title in 2009. He is now 13-3 on the season, with two of the losses coming to Rey, the nation's top-ranked heavyweight, by identical 2-1 scores.

Trice earns the conference's weekly honor for the first time in his career.

UVU’s Ben Kjar named WWC Wrestler of the Week

OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University 125-pounder Ben Kjar (Centerville, Utah/Viewmont HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week by the league on Wednesday after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. 

Kjar wrestled his way to a third place finish and an impressive 5-1 record at the Southern Scuffle last week. The UVU senior stayed true to his pre-tournament seed of third as he won his first three bouts to advance to the semifinals. Kjar won his first match by major decision and followed it up with two straight decision victories, including an 8-6 overtime win over the higher-ranked Garrett Frey of Princeton (No. 11) in the quarters. 
In the semis, Kjar dropped a hard fought 2-0 decision to the the three-time All-American from Minnesota and sixth-ranked Zachary Sanders. After the defeat Kjar responded by beating two more ranked foes in the 16th ranked Frank Martellotti from Penn State and the 20th ranked Jason Lara of Oregon State both by decision to truly earn his third place finish. Kjar is currently ranked 12th (by InterMat) and holds a 14-4 record on the season. 

The conference honor is Kjar's first of the season and seventh of his career. 

The Big Ten names Ed Ruth Wrestler of the Week

Ed Ruth, Penn State Fr. – 174 – Harrisburg, Pa. – Susquehanna Township   
Penn State freshman Ed Ruth earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors after winning five bouts, including decisions over top-ranked Mack Lewnes of Cornell and No. 2 Chris Henrich of Virginia, en route to the 174-pound title at the Southern Scuffle last week. Ruth’s performance led the Nittany Lions to a tie for first place in the 34-team field and earned him the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Ruth, ranked 10th in the country at 174, opened the tournament by pinning Army’s Robert Doyle in 2:11, followed by an 11-3 major decision over Michigan’s Justin Zeerip. He earned his second pin of the event against Lock Haven’s Michael Khoury, scoring the fall in 1:07. Ruth then defeated Lewnes by an 11-5 decision in the semifinals before earning a 7-2 decision over Henrich to take home the title. Ruth now holds a 17-1 record this season.

Chris Henrich Named ACC Wrestler of Week

Virginia 174-pounder was ACC's top finisher at Southern Scuffle
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia 174-pound senior Chris Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career following a second-place finish at the Southern Scuffle last week.

Henrich was the lone finalist among ACC competitors at the Scuffle, taking runner-up honors to Penn State's Ed Ruth, who knocked off both No. 2 ranked Henrich and No. 1 ranked Mack Lewnes of Cornell en route to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Henrich cruised in his other four matches, winning three by major decision or tech fall and one in a medical forfeit. He also picked up a fall in UVa's Dec. 18 dual at Campbell, needing less than one period to pin Peter Comis. 
Henrich now has 115 career wins and needs just one victory to match the school record, set by Mike Krafchick (1991-95).

Henrich, a native of Lansdale, Pa., was also named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 30, sharing the honor with Maryland's Mike Letts.
Virginia returns to dual action on Friday, taking on Buffalo at 11 a.m. at the Virginia Duals in Hampton.
