Broghammer named Northern Sun Wrestler of the Week

Carl Broghammer claimed his second tournament title of the season in the 197 pound bracket of the 32nd Annual Midwest Classic. Broghammer was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. In his first match, he defeated Corby Running of #17 Ashland by fall (4:17) in the second period. In the quarterfinals, he won 3-1 over Matt Alexander of Ohio Northern, who later lost a 6-5 tiebreaker match with the #3 ranked wrestler in NCAA Division II. The redshirt freshman won his semifinal match 3-2 over Charles Morgan of King, the bracket’s top seed and the 2009 NAIA National Runner Up. 

Broghammer then earned a 3-1 victory in the first sudden victory period over Shane Nolan of UNC-Pembroke, who is ranked #7 in NCAA DII. With the wins, Broghammer improves to 13-2 on the season including five wins by fall.

Schavrien named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week By Steven Keers Missouri Sports Information COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri senior 141 pounder Todd Schavrien was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. It is the first weekly honor for the Poway, Calif., native and the first for the Tigers since the 2008-09 season. Schavrien helped the Tigers to a 2-0 day at the Indiana Duals on Sunday with a pair of bonus point victories, as he defeated Eastern Michigan’s Mike Leholm by a 17-0 score and pinned Indiana’s Mitchell Rinsey in 4:50. Schavrien recorded his technical fall win in the first period, as he made quick work of Leholm. He scored a quick takedown early in the match, and rolled Leholm over five times for three-point near falls, scoring the win with 10 seconds left in the first period. Against Rinsey, Schavrien went up 3-0 with a first period takedown and a second period escape. Late in the second, Rinsey attempted a cradle on Schavrien, but he was able to keep Rinsey on his back and record the pin with 10 seconds remaining in the second. Schavrien, the lone senior in Missouri’s starting lineup this season, is now 10-2 on the year and has won eight straight matches dating back to Nov. 27. He ranks as high as No. 13 in the nation at 141 pounds.
Pennesi named EWL Wrestler of the Week By Daniel Whitehead West Virginia Sports Information Following a strong performance at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, West Virginia University redshirt freshman Nathan Pennesi was named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week. The Latrobe, Pa., native came in second place in the 133-pound weight class after facing some of the nation’s most talented wrestlers. He was defeated in the championship bout by the No. 2 wrestler in the country, Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser, by decision, 2-8, having earned reversal points in the third period of the match. “(Nathan) Pennesi continues to move quickly and has shown a lot of improvement over the early part of this season,” WVU coach Craig Turnbull says. “For him to be in the championship match is a credit to his hard work.” Pennesi, ranked 14th in the country for his weight class, earned three victories by decision as the No. 3 seed in his bracket, including one over sixth-seeded Luis Carranza of Great Falls by major decision, 16-3. He also beat Oregon State’s James Roberts by major decision, 14-3, to advance to the final bout. The engineering major owns an impressive 16-3 record on the year, including a perfect 6-0 in dual meets and a win over Oregon State’s No.8-ranked Kelly Kubec at the Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago. He has registered 65 near-fall points thus far in the season and also has 40 takedowns. His three losses are to ranked opponents. His strong finish helped the Mountaineers to a 12th-place mark to end the tournament. Teammate Shane Young (125 pounds) contributed with a fourth-place finish in his weight class.
Onufer named WWC Wrestler of the Week By James Warnick Western Wrestling Conference University of Wyoming 165-pounder Shane Onufer (Auburn, Wash./Auburn HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week by the league on Tuesday after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. Onufer was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Reno Tournament of Champions after he took first place in the 165-pound division. He finished with a perfect 6-0 record at the tournament which included a 10-2 major decision victory in the title match over No. 13 Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly. The junior recorded two major decisions and a pin. Onufer also helped lead Wyoming to the team title at the Reno tournament for the first time in its history, edging Boise State by 1.5 points for the tournament crown. The conference award is Onufer's first of the season and fourth of his career.
Dallago named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week By Ben Taylor Illinois Sports Information PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Illinois redshirt-freshman 184-pounder Tony Dallago was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Dallago upset No. 8 A.J. Kissel with a pin in 2:59 to give No. 9 Illinois a lead it would never relinquish in a 26-15 dual win over No. 15 Purdue at Huff Hall on Sunday. It is Dallago’s second win over a higher-ranked foe this year and the second Wrestler of the Week honor by an Illini this season after Kyle Dooley earned the award on Nov. 16. Dallago showed how dangerous he is even when trailing in a match, as Kissel scored a takedown 1:56 into the bout and almost got a near-fall, but Dallago flipped over him for a reversal, locked on a headlock with the first-period clock winding down and pinned Kissel with one second remaining in the period. It was Dallago’s first career win over a Top-10 opponent and he improves to 11-5 on the year with six of those wins coming by fall.
