Desert Duals underway in Las Vegas

No. 1-ranked Wartburg College puts its 6-0 record on the line at its Desert Duals tournament Monday, Dec. 20. Coach Jim Miller’s Knights face Baldwin-Wallace College of Ohio, St. John’s University of Minnesota, California Baptist and the University of Chicago.
Action begins at 8 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (10 a.m. Central Standard Time) inside the ballrooms of the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel. Fans will be able to follow round-by-round results via a live blog at http://theorange.wartburg.edu/AthleticsNews/SportsLiveBlog/tabid/280/Default.aspx.
Other teams in the field include Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Morningside College of Sioux City, Grand View College of Des Moines, Olivet College of Michigan and Pacific University of Oregon. The tourney has three schools in the current National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III top 10 (Knights #1, Coe #3 and St. John’s #5), while Olivet is also in the top 30 at No. 27. Grand View is No. 6 and Morningside is No. 15 on the current National Association of Intetcollegiate Athletics’ top 20.
KNIGHTS NOTES: Miller’s program has a 28-dual win streak in regards to the Desert Duals. Their closest call came from Elmhurst College of Illinois in 2004 (26-13). … Senior 149-pounder Jacob Groth (Marshalltown) continues to close in on the Orange and Black’s 100-win club. He has 97 going to Las Vegas. … Junior 184-pounder Dylan Azinger (DeWitt, Iowa) and junior 197-pounder Byron Tate (Clinton) bring unbeaten records into the tournament. Azinger, ranked No. 5, is 11-0, while Tate, ranked No. 1, is 18-0 and has won his last 25 matches in a row. … Tate’s roll goes beyond his win streak, too. He’s been the Outstanding Wrestler honoree at the Simpson Storm Invitational and the Dick Walker Invitational already this season. … Senior heavyweight John Helgerson (West Union), also listed atop his weight class on the NWCA rankings, stands 17-1 and is second on the team in wins. … Other ranked individuals for the Knights are senior 125-pounder Mark Kist (Eagle Grove) (No. 3), junior 133-pounder Michael Kremer (Independence) (No. 9), Groth (No. 7), senior 157-pounder Carrington Banks (Stockbridge, Ga.)(No. 1), and freshman 165-pounder Landon Williams (Davenport) (No. 10).
