Maroulis wins Twitter vote for USOC Athlete of Month; Rowlands takes third

Women’s freestyle wrestler Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) received the most votes on Twitter for the USOC Athlete of the Month awards for November.

Maroulis received 590 votes, which was 49% of the votes cast, to claim the Female Athlete of the Month. In second place was speedskater Jilleanne Rookard, with 511 votes, or 42% of the total vote. A total of 12 female athletes were nominated.

Maroulis won gold medals at the Hargobind International in Canada and the NYAC Freestyle International in New York, N.Y. during November.

Placing third in the voting for Male Athlete of the Month was men’s freestyle wrestler Tommy Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Sunkist Kids).

Winning the voting was gymnast Austin White with 717 votes for 38%. Placing second was speedskater Trevor Mariscano with 628 votes for 33%. Rowlands was third with with 352 votes for 19%. A total of 17 male athletes were nominated.

In November, Rowlands won a gold medal at the Hargobind International in Canada, including a challenge bout for prize money. He was second at the NYAC Freestyle International, and also won his bout in a USA vs. Russia freestyle dual meet in Troy, N.Y.,

The USOC Twitter fan vote will account for 10% of the total for the USOC monthly awards, which also includes votes from the Olympic family and journalists. The final awards selection will be announced within a few days.
