Oklahoma City is top-ranked in new WCWA women’s college rankings

Defending national champion Oklahoma City University is the top ranked team in the most recent Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) women’s college rankings which were released today.
In its first team ranking of the year, Oklahoma City held the top spot, followed by No. 2 Simon Fraser, No. 3 King College, No. 4 the University of the Cumberlands and No. 5 Jamestown College.
King College, which had a strong recruiting class coming in this year, made the biggest jump based upon last year’s finish at the WCWA National Championships. King finished 10th at the 2010 WCWA Nationals, its first year with a women’s varsity program.
Rounding out the top 10 were No. 6. Missouri Valley College; No. 7. Lindenwood; No. 8. University of Regina, No. 9. Menlo College and No. 10. Northern Michigan University (USOEC). Fifteen teams were included in the ranking.

Released for the second time this year were the WCWA individual rankings. Holding a No. 1 ranking for the second straight time this year were four wrestlers from Simon Fraser, Victoria Anthony at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Helen Maroulis at 55 kg/121 lbs., Danielle Lappage at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Hillary Greening at 80 kg/176 lbs., along with Kristie Davis of Oklahoma City at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
Anthony, Maroulis, Lappage and Greening were WCWA champions last year. Maroulis and Davis were ranked one weight class lower than where they received their No. 1 ranking in the October ranking.
Other wrestlers who received No. 1 rankings by the WCWA were Nicole Woody of Oklahoma City at 44 kg/97 lbs., Gabrielle Henry of the Univ. of the Cumberlands) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Ashley Hudson of Oklahoma City at 59 kg/130 lbs., Melissa Simmons of Oklahoma City at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. and Marina Lambert of King College at 90 kg/198 lbs.
Oklahoma City and Simon Fraser both had four No. 1 ranked wrestlers, with the Univ. of the Cumberlands and King College had one each.
