Huber named NEWA Wrestler of the Week By Kent Cherrington Plymouth State Sports Information One of the top wrestlers on the Plymouth State University wrestling team was recognized Monday by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) with the selection of New England Wrestler of the Week. Junior Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) is this week’s recipient for the Panthers after his performance last weekend in the 21st Annual Doug Parker Invitational Tournament at Springfield College. He helped PSU finish in sixth place out of 18 schools at the tournament, including third among the 13 New England schools in the event. A 125-pounder, Huber went unbeaten in five bouts to win the championship in his weight class, and he was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. He recorded one pin among his five wins, while defeating New England’s seventh-ranked wrester11-4 in a quarterfinal bout and winning the championship with a medical forfeit over SUNY Brockport sophomore Tyler Marlow, who is ranked sixth nationally at 125 pounds. Ranked No. 2 in New England, Huber is now 6-0 this season and 45-10 in his career. The Panthers, who have moved up to fifth in the New England Division III poll, will compete in their home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 1, vs. Rhode Island College at Foley Gymnasium (7:00 p.m.)
Upper Iowa's Trevor Franklin named NSIC Wrestler of the Week By Nick Kornder Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference NSIC Wrestler of the Week Trevor Franklin (125 lbs, So., South New Berlin, N.Y. / Unadilla Valley HS) Upper Iowa Trevor Franklin claimed the 125 pound title in the Gold Bracket of the Brute-Adidas Open. Franklin won his first match by fall (2:22). In his second match, the UIU lightweight defeated Augustana’s T.J. North, a two-time high school state champion, by decision 5-2. In his semi-final match, Franklin defeated Lloyd McKinney, ranked #3 in Division III, of Wisconsin-LaCrosse by fall (5:39); the UIU grappler was dominating the match and was near a tech. fall when he got the pin. In the finals, Franklin won an 8-4 decision over Corey Ulmer of MSU Moorhead to claim the title.
Travis Rutt named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week By Bob Healy Big Ten Conference Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Travis Rutt, Wisconsin Jr. – 184 – New Prague, Minn. – New Prague Wisconsin’s Travis Rutt takes home Big Ten Wrestler of the Week laurels after winning four bouts, including three over ranked opponents, in the fourth-ranked Badgers’ four dual wins over the weekend. Rutt, ranked 12th in the country at 184 pounds, started the weekend with an 8-6 decision over No. 16 Andrew Saunders of UNC Greensboro in Wisconsin’s 34-12 dual win on Friday. The junior followed with three wins on Sunday at the ACC Challenge, including a 9-1 major decision over 11th-ranked Tommy Spellman of No. 19 Virginia Tech, an 8-3 decision against North Carolina’s Antonio Giorgio and a 13-6 decision over No. 15 Jason McCroskey of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The weekly award marks the first of Rutt’s career. Apprentice's Ricky Anderson named USCAA Wrestler of the Week By Jim Heath Newport News Apprentice School Junior Ricky Anderson was honored on Tuesday by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association as its Wrestler of the Week for the week ending November 20. He joins Marcus Chevres as winners by the USCAA. Anderson, a Chesapeake, Va. native and outside machinist apprentice, went 6-0 on the weekend winning all three bouts in the Knight Brawl Duals and going 3-0 to win the 157-pound weight class at the Central Florida Open on November 20. His win in the final over Hunter Allen of Mercer University in 1:17 was the 52nd win by fall in his career to break the school record. Cecil Lee held the mark of 51 set in 2009. The Builders will now compete on December 4 in the York College Spartan Invitational in York, Pa. That field will be one of the strongest of the season for the Builders as they'll see six teams that are ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Top 30 in the ten team field.
Clarion's James Fleming named EWL Wrestler of the Week By Rich Herman Clarion Sports Information Clarion University sophomore 157-pound wrestler James Fleming (West Mifflin) was named today by the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) as the “Wrestler of the Week†for his performance at the Body Bar Invitational Tournament on Nov. 16. Fleming, a sophomore, was 4-0 at the Body Bar Invite and captured first place at 157-pounds. He opened the tournament with a fall at 0:55 over Chales Aungst (Drexel), then an 18-2 t. fall at 5:50 over Zack Kline (C. Mich), a fall at 2:11 over Craig Eifert (Cornell) and a 10-1 win in the finals over Mark Lewandowski (Buffalo). Fleming has an 11-1 record to start the year. “James has had a strong start to the 2011 season and continues to improve at 157-pounds every time he’s out on the mat,†said Clarion’s fifth year head coach Teague Moore. “He works very hard every day to improve his skills and has a great attitude towards wrestling. We’re proud to have him in blue and gold.†Fleming had an outstanding freshman season at Clarion in 2010 posting an overall record of 28-8 at 149-pounds, placed 4th at PSAC’s, 2nd at EWL’s and qualified for the NCAA Division I Nationals. He was named the PSAC “Freshman of the Yearâ€. Fleming, the son of John Fleming and Regina Fitzhenry, was a 4-time PIAA placewinner at West Mifflin High under coach Tony Salopek. He had a career record of 130-15.
Ivan Lopouchanski named SoCon Wrestler of the Week By Jonathan Caskey Southern Conference UNCG sophomore Ivan Lopouchanski has been named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competitions this season through November 23. Lopouchanski is currently 11-1 through the first three weeks of the season. He began his season by going 5-0 at the Third Annual Hokie Open Wrestling Tournament where he won the 149 pound title. He picked up four wins, two by pin and one by major decision to advance to the finals. In the finals, he defeated No. 16 Brian Stephen’s from Virginia Tech, 9-4. The sophomore followed that up with the 149-pound title at the NC State Open the next weekend. He had a pair of 16-0 technical falls to begin the tournament and then received an injury default into the finals where he defeated Duke’s AJ Guardado. The Spartans opened the dual season this past Friday against No. 4 Wisconsin and Lopouchanski once again rose to the occasion as he defeated Cole Schmitt, who was ranked 16th-nationally. UNCG then competed at the ACC Challenge on Sunday against No. 15 Virginia Tech and North Carolina. Lopouchanski dropped his first match of the season against Virginia Tech as he lost the rematch to Brian Stephens, who was ranked 19th-nationally at the time. He then defeated North Carolina’s Jake Vonderbruegge, 6-2, in the other dual match. After not being ranked in the preseason, Lopouchanski has moved to No. 16 in the Intermat poll at 149 pounds and as high as No. 11 on WrestlingReport.com. Other nominees: Turtogtokh Luvsandorj (The Citadel) and Prescott Garner (Chattanooga).
