Anthony Robles said the game plan was the same, to simply go out and dominate. 

Robles didn’t only execute, he did so with authority in his 20-2 technical fall victory over Minnesota’s Zach Sanders on Sunday afternoon at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., in the 45th edition of the NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Marines.

Robles took an early lead with a takedown 24 seconds into the match. The next two and a half minutes would be agony for the fiery Minnesota junior. After a barrage of tilts, Robles led Sander 14-0 after one period.

In the second, Sanders took neutral and took down Robles and quickly cut him, needing to play catch-up. Robles finished off Sanders, scoring five more points from a scramble for two and three more nearfall points, finishing the scramble with a Granby-style hold.

Robles’ teammate Bubba Jenkins was equally as impressive. 

Just over a week after his loss to Tyler Chang of NAIA Embry-Riddle, Jenkins used the strength of four takedowns and a second period cement mixer to build a big lead the he never relinquished en route to a surprising 12-4 major decision over Boise State’s Adam Hall. 

Following Robles’ win at 125, Oklahoma State picked up the first of two wins on the day as Jordan Oliver stopped Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser 8-7 in a match that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

Oliver scored three takedowns and a reversal, while giving up only a late takedown in the third.

At 141, Oklahoma’s Zack Bailey countered a reshot with a go-behind with 33 seconds left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and ultimately defeat Ohio’s Germane Lindsey 3-2.

Bucknell’s Kevin LeValley became the first Bison wrestler to win a match at the All-Star Classic, stopping Edinboro’s Torsten Gillespie 6-0 at 149 pounds. LeValley broke a scoreless tie in the second period on Gillespie’s second stall warning and then sucked him back to the mat for three nearfall points to build a 4-0 lead and cruise to a 6-0 lead.

Maryland, represented in a third straight All-Star Classic, got a victory from sophomore Josh Asper at 165 pounds. Asper used a first-period takedown en route to a 3-2 victory over Wyoming’s Shane Onufer. It will likely be Onufer’s last competition of the year at 165, since he’s certified at 157 and will be making the move down in the coming days.

Stanford’s Nick Amuchastegui became the first Cardinal wrestler to win at the All-Star Classic since 2004 with a solid 4-0 win over Illinois Jordan Blanton at 174. Amuchastegui, who moved up from 165 pounds where he was an All-American last season, earned a first period takedown and a third period escape to go with over two minutes of riding time to earn the victory.

Joe LeBlanc became the first Wyoming Cowboy to win a match at the All-Star Classic by defeating Purdue’s A.J. Kissel 10-5 at 184 pounds. LeBlanc built a 6-1 lead and piled up over three minutes of riding time in the victory.

Oklahoma State picked up its second victory of the night with Clayton Foster’s 7-3 victory over Minnesota’s Sonny Yohn. Foster broke a 3-3 first period tie with an escape and takedown in the second and amassed nearly three minutes of riding time in the victory.

For the second time in two years, the heavyweight match was decided in the waning seconds when Clovis native Ryan Flores of American University finished a single leg in the final 10 seconds to upend Central Michigan’s Jarod Trice 3-1. 

Flores grew up 15 minutes from the facility.
