NEW YORK, N.Y. – Four past World medalists from the United States won gold medals in a highly competitive New York AC Freestyle International Championships on Sunday.

In the final bout of the event, and the highlighted showdown of the women’s finals, two-time World champion Kristie Davis (Oklahoma City, Okla./Gator WC/OCU) beat 2010 World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), 0-3, 2-0, 5-1 in the finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

After splitting the first two periods, Davis hit a slick footsweep for a takedown and exposure points to win the deciding third period. Davis was named Outstanding Wrestler in the women’s division.

The five-athlete round-robin at Davis’ weight was loaded with talent, also featuring U.S. college star Alli Ragan of King College, 2010 Junior World champion Danielle Lappage of Canada and past U.S. Open runner-up Vanessa Oswalt of the U.S. Army.

“I feel I could have wrestled better, but I did good for the first time down to this weight,” said Davis. “I didn’t cut any weight, and felt strong. There was a lot of talent in this weight class, which is good because we need to push each other.”

Davis praised Pirozhkova after their intense finals showdown.

“She has improved tremendously,” said Davis. She is an outstanding competitor. It will be a battle. We will push each other for the next few years.”

Davis is tied with Bruce Baumgartner with the most career World medals among Americans with nine. It was the first time she has competed at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. since winning the U.S. Open at the division in 2004.

Capturing the women’s title at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. was 2008 World champion Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) who scored a dominant technical fall over 2010 U.S. World Team member Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 8-1, 6-0. Chun opened up her offense, with a variety of takedowns, throws and turns.

Chun and Lampe have met in the U.S. World Team Trials the last three years, with Chun winning in 2008 and 2009 and Lampe winning the series in 2010.

2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) and 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) were among the U.S. champions in the men’s division.

In a rematch of the 2010 World Team Trials finals, Herbert defeated Keith Gavin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC), 2-0, 2-0 at 84 kg/185 lbs. Herbert beat Gavin in a three-match series at the 2010 World Team Trials.

In a battle of training partners at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., Dlagnev defeated 2007 U.S. World Team member Tommy Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Sunkist Kids), 1-0, 1-0 in the finals. Dlagnev and Rowlands train together at the Ohio Regional Training Center in Columbus.

Overall, the United States won 10 of the 14 gold medals awarded during the event.

The U.S. claimed six of the seven women’s gold medals. The other U.S. individual champions were Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Christen Paysse (Fullerton, Calif./Univ. of the Cumberlands) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Brittany Delgado (Gator WC/OCU) at 72 kg/158.75 lbs.

Maroulis, a two-time Junior World medalist and 2008 U.S. World Team member, defeated 2010 U.S. World Team member Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the finals, 2-0, 1-0. Campbell has dropped to 55 kg after competing at 59 kg in recent seasons.

Rix, who was fifth in the 2008 and 2009 World Championships, defeated Canadian Amanda Gerhart in the finals, 1-0, 1-0.

Paysse went 4-0 in a five-athlete roundrobin to win her weight division. Delgado won her weight class uncontested.

The other U.S. champions in men’s freestyle were past World Team members Trent Paulson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Paulson, a member of the 2009 U.S. World team, defeated former Iowa star Ryan Morningstar (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC), 4-0, 5-2 in the finals. In a field featuring eight of the top 10 ranked Americans in the weight class, unranked Morningstar had a strong performance in his debut on the Senior freestyle circuit.

In another rematch of the 2010 World Team Trials finals, Bergman defeated 2009 U.S. World Team member Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC), 3-1, 1-0. Bergman beat Varner in the World Team Trials finals last year.

Russia captured the three lightest weight classes in men’s freestyle, with titles from Petr Sivcev at 55 kg/121 lbs., Rasul Murtazaliev at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Magomed Gadziev at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Gadziev was named Outstanding Wrestler in men’s freestyle, after defeating Canada’s Haislan Garcia in the finals.

The other individual champion in women’s freestyle was Jessica MacDonald of Canada at 51 kg/112.25 pounds.
