Takashi Doscher began documenting the life of his high school friend Kyle Maynard in 2008.
The documentary will be shown on ESPN2 in a 60-minute film entitled "A Fighting Chance" tonight, Monday, November 8. The show is scheduled to air at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. Check local listings for broadcast in your area.
The film chronicles Collins Hill High School grad Maynard, a congenital amputee, as he pursues his dream to compete in Mixed Martial Arts.
TV Guide provides this information on the documentary: “The story of quadruple amputee Kyle Maynard and his quest for an official mixed-martial-arts bout against an able-bodied fighter. Maynard, who’s a motivational speaker, talks with severely wounded military veterans about overcoming adversity.â€
Maynard was born March 24, 1986 with a condition known as congenital amputation that has left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees. It did not story Maynard from pursuing his life passions, including a career as an amateur wrestler. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with the Medal of Courage award in 2005.
He became a very successful varsity wrestler on one of the best teams in the Southeast. In spite of his limitations, Maynard found a way to win 36 varsity matches his senior year, while defeating several state place finishers and state champions during his final season.
The film is part of ESPN's weeklong tribute to Veterans Day on Thursday.
"For someone who has gone through Iraq or Afghanistan and has lost a limb, it's less about stepping into a cage and fighting someone. Although that is something I can relate with," Maynard said. "But it's more about how is he going to live his life. It sort of opens that window up and says maybe I'm not going to do it exactly like he does, but I will be able to do it. That's the most important thing. More than money, fame, whatever else."
A 2004 ESPY award winner, Kyle has appeared as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, ABC's 20/20, Good Morning America, the CBS Early Show. He has also appeared on HBO Real Sports, and as a cover story in USA Today. Kyle continues to inspire others as the author of his autobiography, No Excuses (2005), a New York Times Best Seller.
He recently opened his first fitness center, No Excuses CrossFit, in Suwanee, GA. He continues to train and compete in power lifting and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And amidst much debate over his capability to compete in the sport, on April 25th 2009, Kyle made history by becoming the first quadruple amputee fighter ever to step into a cage and fight in Mixed Martial Arts.
A trailer on the movie is posted on the website for A Fighting Chance, as well as on Kyle Maynard’s website.
