Eight U.S. wrestlers win gold at Hargobind International in Canada; Rowlands win $5k bonus prize SURREY, B.C., Canada – Eight U.S. wrestlers on gold medals at the Hargobind International on Saturday. The men’s division was held in its entirety on Saturday, along with the gold-medal finals of the women’s division in the four Olympic weights. The rest of the women’s tournament was held on Friday. Claiming gold medals in men’s freestyle were: • Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. • Lloyd Rogers (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. • Raymond Jordan (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. • Wynn Michalak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. • Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Winning gold medals in women’s freestyle were: • Sara Fulp Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo/,/New York AC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. • Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. • Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Bears) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Bunch defeated U.S. opponent Matt Valenti (Philadelphia, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) in the finals. Bunch was a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team. Rogers stopped U.S. opponent Kirk White (Boise, Idaho (Bronco WC) in the finals. White, a past NCAA champion for Boise State, has been retired for a few years. Jordan beat Canadian Tamerlin Tagziev of Impact in the finals. Michalak won the gold-medal finals over Canadian World Team member Khetag Pliev by injury default. He reached the finals with a semifinal win over 2010 U.S. World Team member J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC). Rowlands, who was fifth at the 2007 World Championships, stopped Canadian Sunny Dhinsa of Guru in the finals. Fulp-Allen won her finals bout against Canadian Lindsay Prickett of the Guelph WC Maroulis, a two-time Junior World medalist, beat Canadian Jazzi Barker in the finals. Maroulis attends Simon Fraser Univ. in Canada. Bernard, who was fifth at the 2008 Olympics and a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team, completed a five-athlete roundrobin with a victory over Erica Wiebe of Canada. There was $35,000 in prize money given at the event. Champions in the seven Olympic weight classes in the men's division win $2,000, the second place finishers earn $500, and the third place finishers win $250. In the women's division wrestlers who win one of the four Olympic weight classes also win $1,000, while second place earns $500, and third place walks away with $250. Also included in the format are challenge matches between the men's freestyle winners. In the bonus match between the 60 kg champion against the 66 kg champ for $1,000, Garcia defeated Bunch. In the bonus match between the 74 kg champ against the 84 kg champ for $2,000, Jordan defeated Rogers. In the featured bonus match between the 96 kg champ against the 120 kg champ for $5,000, Rowlands defeated Michalak. Winning a silver medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. was Teyon Ware (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC), who lost to Canadian Haislan Garcia in the finals.
