Golston, Sluberski win Concordia Tournament titles in Canada; USOEC takes team title

MONTREAL, Canada – Two members of the U.S. Olympic Education Center’s women’s wrestling team at Northern Michigan Univ. won gold medals at the Concordia Tournament on Saturday.
Capturing gold medals were Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y.) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.
Golson won three bouts to capture the title, including a victory over Canadian Renilda de Dios in the finals.
Sluberski defeated Canadian Natalie Bondy of the Univ. of Alberta in her finals match.
Golston is a high school junior at Marquette High School. Sluberski is a sophomore at Northern Michigan, with her major undeclared.
Capturing silver medals were Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Moriah Fernandez (Morgan Hill, Calif.) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
Brown won her first two matches over Canadian opponents to qualify for the finals, where she was defeated by Canadian Samantha Stewart of BBWC.
Fernandez was in a five-athlete round-robin, finishing with an impressive 3-1 record. Her only loss came to eventual champion Sabrina Kelly, a Canadian who wrestles for the U of Alberta.
Brown and Fernandez are Northern Michigan students. Brown is a junior, studying psychology. Fernandez is a junior, studying business.
The other USOEC wrestler in the event, Cassandra Schmidt, Missoula, Montana, placed fourth at 59 kg/130 lbs. with a 2-2 record.
The USOEC team scored 33 points in the event, which was tied with the Univ. of Alberta. The USOEC won the tie-breaking procedure and was named team champions. There were 16 teams in the tournament.
