TORINO, Italy – Jarod Trice (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Central Michigan) placed eighth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., the top U.S. Greco-Roman performance at the 2010 FISU University World Championships, held at the Pala Ruffini arena on Friday.

In his first match, Trice lost to 2008 Asian Junior champion Amir Ghasemimonjazi of Iran, 0-1, 4-0, 0-1. When Ghasemimonjazi reached the gold-medal match, Trice was drawn back into the repechage rounds.

Trice lost to Vladimir Sariev of Russia, 0-4, 0-1 in the repechage match. Had he won that bout, Trice would have qualified for a bronze-medal match.

Trice is an All-American for Central Michigan, and currently is the No. 2 ranked heavyweight in Div. I college wrestling.

“Trice wrestled well, and had an opportunity to beat his Iranian opponent,” said National Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson. “He also wrestled well in his second match. He got caught in an arm throw and that was the difference against the Russian.”

Three U.S. wrestlers lost their opening match, and when their opponent failed to reach the gold-medal finals, they were all eliminated from competing in the repechage rounds. Those who were eliminated with 0-1 records were Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Kerry Regner (Darlington, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Talan Knox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Nowry placed ninth in his weight class, scoring a team point for the United States. Nowry was fifth at the 2010 Junior World Championships and sixth at the 2009 Junior World Championships.

Neither Regner or Knox placed in the top 10 of their weight class. Knox lost a bout to Alo Toom of Estonia, who was third in the 2008 University World Championships and finished fifth this year.

Nowry is currently with the USOEC Greco-Roman program at Northern Michigan Univ., while Regner and Knox previously were members of the USOEC program there.

“Overall, we didn’t perform very well this morning. We weren’t executing, and did not have high energy,” said Anderson.

Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have weighed in for the final day of competition on Saturday. They have drawn first-round opponents, but the names of the athletes are not currently available.

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Joe Kemmerer (Mountain Top, Pa./Virginia Gold) will open with an opponent from Poland.

At 74 kg/163 lbs., Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz./New York AC) drew an athlete from Italy.

At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Zack Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn./Minnesota Storm) opens against a Croatian opponent.
