The Marines help California Division I schools as a partner with the NWCA for the 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic

Fresno, Calif. – October 25, 2010 – The United States Marine Corps has an established and honored history of not only protecting the country with distinction and devotion, but also serving their communities with charity and integrity. Staying true to their principles, the Marines have joined forces with the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and California USA Wrestling for the 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Marines to be held at Selland Arena in Fresno, California on November 21, 2010.

The NWCA All-Star Classic is built on 45 years of tradition and is unique from other wrestling tournaments. The highest-ranked collegiate wrestlers from across the nation will compete in the time-honored event. The All-Star Classic has evolved over the years, becoming a kick-off event for the college-wrestling season; it consistently draws wrestling enthusiasts and general sports fans alike. The intense matches between equally skilled and aggressive athletes often leave fans in a state of suspense until the NCAA Division I Championships where they hope to witness a rematch.

This is the sixth year that the Marines have collaborated with the NWCA on the All-star Classic. Their support of this year’s event and its cause is highly valued by the NWCA, California USA Wrestling and the wrestling community.

“We are forever grateful for the long-standing relationship we have with the Marines,” said Mike Moyer, executive director of NWCA. “Their association with the All-Star Classic increases the awareness and status of the event. Plus, there are many parallels between wrestling and the Marines, both must be able to perform at a high physical level, be able to act instinctively and react effectively.”

The 45th annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Marines is being hosted as a fundraiser in association with California USA Wrestling to preserve and grow collegiate wrestling in California. The support of the Marines helps communicate and elevate the event and cause.

“The Marine Corps recognizes the many shared values between Marines and athletes which is why we align the Marine Corps with sports programs at every level, from professional organizations to college and high school programs,” stated Scott Wood, marketing specialist with the Western Recruiting Region, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. “A wrestler’s ability to push his limits, focus on training and attain his goals is inspiring; the character strength of these athletes is what we look for when recruiting. Being involved with the NWCA All-Star Classic allows us to align with a sport that shares our values and provides an opportunity for students and the community to learn more about the Marines.”

The 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Marines will be held at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California on Sunday, November 21, 2010. The doors open at 2 p.m. The All-Star Classic follows a weekend of fundraising events.
